anyone have any methods for getting these things away from your property? i can barely walk out the door let alone take my dog for a walk with a hundred of these things trying to land and bite you.

They are like mosquitos, no way to get rid of them chemically.

Some of the bear guys I know who are running dogs during the summer, wear some adhesive strips on the back of their ball caps that attract and trap them. I've never used them, but guess they do help. I've seen them at some of the outdoor shops. Cannot recall them name of them, but guess they are worth the money if you have to be out with deer flies.

Spray yourself with deet-based repellents if you plan on spending at least an hour outside. These types of bug sprays repel both gnats and deerflies.

What works for me when i'm on the tractor is vicks vabo rub. I have a nasty hat I put some on the bill and top of the hat as well as a thin coat behind my ears and on my neck.... I don't know why but it works! An old farmer told me this

When I'm sitting out in the woods or walking around, I break off a fern and place it upside done(stem end up) on top of my hat. They no longer try to land on me. Not sure why, but is does work.

Ditto on the Vicks Vapo Rub..Had an old boy tell me about us'in it about 40yrs ago Works on deer flies and black flies. Used it in Canada to repel'em. they wouldn't come near ya, of course, neither would anything else. Would put just a dab of it on the forehead and a couple dabs on your neck and yer good to go!

Stick double sided carpet tape to the back of your ball cap. They will land there and get stuck.
