I came across the following video on Youtube of a Gopro inside a crayfish trap in a Rusty infested lake. You can see and hear the feeding frenzy that ensues shortly after the trap is placed in the lake.

What I especially noticed is how they crayfish will simply reach through the trap if they can, just a great reminder to suspend bait or use a bait box to keep it away from the sides of the trap, you can see they only caught a few vs how many came to the smell of food.

Another video showing the same behavior (reaching through vs going in)

River trapping is pretty directional.Scent flows down stream in a kind of a cone shaped flow. You will get some from the sides and up stream but for the most part you are getting them from down stream. In a lake with somewhat still water the scent is going to spread in all directions. So the making the videos should have been using traps with opening an all four sides.
