Its true! Homestead Dam closed 300 ft down and no fishing from 1am-4am. The river was packed at every hole at both entrances the next day.

I don't see the logic, It merely spreads out the violators where they are harder to catch. One undercover guy there could write 50 tickets a day..

It’s not just the violators it’s letting the fish pass. Violators will always be there and in bigger numbers than CO’s.

Understood. It always seemed like the fish had a hard time passing that barrier. (why they stacked up below it) Would a ladder type barrier not stop the lamprey?

The fish are like sitting ducks once they reach the dam.

I posted this in the nw rivers earlier but this breaks down the last two years of dnr enforcement at homestead. Yes, the 300 foot just pushes guys down but I don't think many people realize the betsie isn't a put and take river. Screenshot_20200910-212018_Textra.jpeg

What nonsense is this? King Salmon, Trout, Steelhead have all been clearing Homestead dam for decades. There is no shortage of naturally spawned Kings in the Betsie at all, despite the amazing crowds of Snaggers/Liners who have hammered them for the last 5-10 years, when the "secret" got out. I have to think the DNR extended the closed section to reduce crowding during the covid crisis. Because nothing else makes sense. People have been lining up, shoulder-to-shoulder to fish the trough below the old cable for a very long time, and the fish populations have flourished.

Homestead dam IS a fish ladder, of sorts.

I just hate to see Homestead go because I could always get a buddy or kid on a salmon there when they were blanked everywhere else. Sort of a last resort dealio. Watching people snap rods and bend nets was always worth the price of admission also. LOL

On a serious note, I have never fished above the Homestead dam. Is there a ramp or decent access point above it? Thanks
