Last year was my first year ice fishing and I am now hooked. That being said I only used live bait which is kind of a pain. What are some artificial baits/lures that you all use? I primarily jig for pan fish and occasionally walleye.

    Any information would be appreciated.

Why is live bait a pain?
That's all I use 99.9% of the time. I'll buy 1000 spikes late in the fall, & use the remaining ones in the spring.
Good zip lock freezer bag, in a Tupperware, in the fridge. Mark the Tupperware for the Mrs.
I'll swap out some of the sawdust when it gets wet with some oatmeal

I've had great success on panfish, especially crappie, with micro plastics from J&S, Clam and Trigger X. Also small jigging raps and ultralight rippin raps when they're aggressive (walleye love these too). Walleye, at least in the clear NW LP lakes I fish seem to prefer jigging baits tipped with a minnow head or sometimes a whole minnow; that said I plan to spend more time with plastics this winter. You better start looking for a second job, this can become an expensive hobby real fast.

In the last few years I've started using plastics for pan fishing more and more. I still carry a selection of waxies and spikes because there are always days when that's all they'll take.

However, when they're biting on plastics the fish seem to run larger and I'm not constantly digging into the bait container with semi-frozen fingers.

My favorite plastic are the JR's Jig Tails line of baits.

I buy my bait in bulk. Its way cheaper and saves me from having to go to the bait shop daily.

I keep the tubs(worm containers) in a cool dry place, basement works great. Pick out the dead ones whenever I fill up my bait pucks.

I also have been using more and more plastics but they are just like everything else. They have a time and place. I always step on the ice with spikes and usually start out using them before I go to artificial baits.

Great information guys, I really appreciate it. I am not looking to completely abandon waxies or spikes but I would like to expand my tackle box and challenge myself even more.

    Thanks again.

I have tried several brands of artificial baits will success . I am on a fixed income and it seemed silly to spend a few bucks on such tiny bits of plastic. Now I cut the tails off a few used bass tube baits to use when the gill and crappie bit is hot. Works great but still always have waxies and spikes on hand when things get tough.

Good Lord, I just looked at the Cabelas add. The prices are nuts for ice fishing stuff. Glad I have basically every thing I need.
