An old, dead, or dying battery, can show 12 volts of a meter, but have no amps. Keep in mind that 12V, on a 12V battery is just about 50% discharged.

Go with what wallhanger says but take a fresh battery with you and kill 2 birds with one wrench!

And, regardless of the age of the battery, run a check on the charging system to make sure it is functioning. Clean everything.

One of the most useful things about the Internet is that for every vehicle, there is probably a website for people to discuss them. That site will be peopled by those folks that have a back yard full of 4 copies of the same 27 year old vehicle in various stages of disassembly as they use them to keep vehicle #5, out in the driveway, still running. Those guys know every oddball situation on the vehicle: “oh yah, that one wire always crimps and then fails right under the _____”. And they start their day with morning coffee to see if anyone has come along to ask about that one wire.

Oh and the one tool that I have seen ‘fix’ more cars than any other is a wire brush.

But in the 21st century, replacing a starter is no fun any more.

Wasn't much fun on a 1996 Jeep with easy access.

Why did it fail? Oil leaked into it.

How did I figure this out? When the oil leaked into me...

Jeep did the exact same thing. Was a poor negative battery connection. Lights came on radio started hit the key and click click click...

Might sound dumb but make sue its in park or neutral. Seen this many times.
Another thing is the neutral switch. Had it just go bad on the boat.

Ha ha...yeah that was a bad time for my 16 year old self. Parked it, ran inside. I had no idea why when I got back out it had rolled back a few feet, and wouldn't start. About 5 minutes of panic wondering what was wrong with it, till I stumbled on the gear shifter still in drive:dizzy:

Had a similar situation with the Ole fishing mobile, ended up being the theft deterrent devise. If Eye manually locked and unlocked the vehicle a couple of times it would start right up.

I would check the starter and connections first.Had a Chevy starter just quit working one day.Turned out to be the braided wire from the solenoid to the starter. They are bare and made of a very fine strand of wire.Just had corroded away.

A Regal gave me fits. Had a corroded fusible link in the starter wire. Was still holding , but not letting enough juice through.

So I get up here and the car now clicks when turning the key, tried jumping it and nothing.

took it to the auto parts store and battery is dead, they just called and said it’s now charged and tested good.

Going to put it back in the car and see if it starts, if it does could it be the alternator?

Baseball dad is ahead of me by 18 minutes: “Battery is toast.”

    Aftermarket remote starter?
