This rang a bell in my memory...thought something similar happened a few years back. Did a Google search and turns out it was botulism. Looks like freshwater drum aka sheepshead are highly susceptible.

They can all die, I won't loose any sleep over it.

Last 4th of July I fished the Saginaw river in Saginaw and noticed the river was full of dead sheap head of all sizes. Seemed more like a die off for some reason rather than being killing from fishing or what ever else

I'm not really sure why you all hate catching sheepshead. It sure is nice to be catching them on my perch gear or while casting for eyes. Don't get me wrong I want mostly perch and walleye but love the thrill of a fighting fish as well. I also love hooking cats, big whiteys and bass when fishing for eyes. I guess its just me...

Those big sheep are plain fun to fight. Walleyes fight like a wet sock.

Agreed. Walleye are downright boring, I only go after them when I want to eat them. I went out specifically targeting white bass last weekend on ultralight gear and had a blast!

We have been known to get our walleye then head in a little shallower and cast weapons for sheephead and fish till your arms ache. When my boys were younger they could hardly reel them in. Like catching 20lb carp on a noodle rod on 6lb test. FUN.

We're approaching their spawning season. Usually peaks around Father's Day on LSC

    Talk about stupid fishing.

It seems that there are a lot of people who are, for some reason, opposed to nature. Kinda don't make much sense on a site like this, but what the hay nay?

Thats it then! Sheepheads lives do matter! A peaceful protest has been proposed for the 26th of June in downtown Kalkaska, that better than the rest of the fish Trout Statue to be torn down...

No Walleye or Perch allowed. If so they will be called non fish & bad reports from the media.

I used to dock by the netters in Monroe and they were targeting sheep head and carp for sale in New York. I remember thinking as they were emptying that boat, with all they are taking how come I still catch so many. LOL

They take live sheepshead, carp and Buffalo fish to NYC to make gefilte fish for their Jewish customers. The fish have to be alive when they get to NYC to be kosher. They transport then in open top tanker trucks with a mesh top and huge oxygen tanks on the back. Used to watch the guy load them at Luna Pier Harbour Club. We used to kill them until the netter told us that they eat the heck out of zebra mussels.
