I've scoured this sub-forum and found lots of really good info but I thought I'd throw a line out (haha) and see what comes back. Not all that concerned about targeting a specific species. I'm pretty well set up with gear for most things Pier related. My plan is to pull an all-nighter either off a Pentwater or Ludington pier on Sunday night (8/30/20). Hoping to get into some walleye or steelhead if possible. Figured one or two rods set with bait and one for me to cast. Sorry if I sound like a newb but I kind of am when it comes to fishing the piers on LM. My wife and I are going to be in the area for a charter trip with George Freeman/Free Style Charters on 9/1/20 and I'm leaving my boat behind to force me to work the shore. I'm interested in possible surf fishing opportunities if the piers seem to crowded. Any help offered is much appreciated.

If your going to be there on 8/30 you should cast for Kings as they should be coming into the rivers at that time. 8/30 is way early for steelhead off the piers.

Hey, thanks for all the suggestions. Plenty of ideas for me to try. Do you guys find that the bite is specific to a time of day? I really want to try and make it an all night outing. Get on the pier and get set up just before dusk and stay until just after dawn. Does this make any sense or am I just in for a long night of drinking coffee and practicing my world class casting technique (haha )? Are the walleye still hanging around the piers that time of year (late Aug, - early Sept)?

I've got a few spoons mentioned and I also have a ton of rapala style lures (fire tiger countdowns, reef runner deep divers, etc, etc).

That is a great plan. I've caught lots of Salmon off piers between 2am - 6am

A good all-nighter would be from about 9:30 pm to 8:30 am and if you can get some live alewife, hook em on a sliding weight rig and set in rod holder at dawn.

You can catch salmon off the piers anytime of the day. The main factor is that they need to be there and willing to bite your lure. I fish for salmon on my terms, I fish when I get there, I catch fish when they want to get caught.
I'm a little sarcastic, those all nighters are long gone for me. My fall fishing plan is to eat well, do a little searching, do a little watching the crazies at Tippy, go to the casino, and if there is time left...do a little fishing.
I fish a lot harder on the St. Marys, much more opportunity. I hope Canada will let me in Sept.

Thanks a lot everyone. I'm getting pretty excited about the trip. Between my all day charter trip on the 1st and hitting the piers it should be a good time. We've been hammering the LMBs here in Central MI on the inland lakes but I'm itching to get hooked into something worth grilling.

    Thanks again!
