I got a second email for the dnr (do nothing right) the other day saying that there a was a mistake in the first email about this. They did not tell what the mistake was!

To over simplify.......do we want the NRC following biological science? Social science? Political science? Or do we want them following some combination thereof? I see those as rhetorical questions because the answer is as obvious as the nose on my face.....

After reading countless threads on this web site over the years it appears to me the "correct" answer depends entirely on whose ox is being gored at any given time! Am I wrong? FM

Proposal G said Sound Science. Hunters want to think sound meant biologic. When Rod Clute was the big game specialist he used to say sound science meant 50% biologic and 50% social. Hunters who want sound to mean biologic will always have issues with how deer are managed in Michigan because that is not how the DNR or NRC define sound science.

Fellers, let’s look at this. They want the rules to be easier to interpret.
well, I am in fact a knuckle dragging uneducated wood tic and I read the rules and regs. I understand them quite easily.

now consider this. I couldn’t even spell my own username right.. Interpretation of the rules is a non- issue.

I have contacted my friends and neighbors who hunt the area. They are emailing the NRC with concern on the APR and crossbow.

Re the 3 pt rule in the UP. Why should I have to pass a 4 point when the next guy in camp can legally take that deer? Assuming I bought a combo & he bought a single license. If there is a 3 pt rule regardless of the type of license purchased I will support that. I cannot support only some of the hunters being restricted to 3 pt or better.

Who comes up with these ideas, the idiot squad? Hunting the UP for the past 25 years I have just watched it go to sh#t and then a slight recovery, now it sounds like we are going back to sh#t. With the wolves and the winters the deer pop crashed. No doe tags, restricted combo tag, no late xbow...saw a bit of recovery....so let's reverse all that..good fu$king plan...morons. If it was me I would have the same antler point restrictions as the nw13 in the UP...ask the hunters there how they like taking 8 points and bigger, they probably hate it. News flash NRC/DNR hunters like to shoot big bucks and see deer while hunting, provide those 2 things and you won't ever have to worry about hunter #'s and you could double the price of tags...DNR dont go patting yourself on the back either on hunter #'s this year either, ever heard of covid and all the incentives not to work.

Hopefully hunters will contact the NRC prior to next months vote. The bridge count was down 40% this morning when a friend crossed.

If you like relaxed regulations that’s fine. If you don’t the changes will be for a three year period. Will they improve your hunting experience?

What specifically are you attributing the decrease to?

Not that I am disagreeing with you on impacts of what the DNR and NRC are doing to hunting in the state of Mi, but.....if you want the same regulations as the NW13, should they also ban baiting like they did in the NW13?

    That will go over well.....

I can’t say with any certainty across the UP but at least in this area we had snow cover from late October through early May. Deer left early for the yards. I don’t know when they returned due to spring travel restrictions. 7 continuous months of snow didn’t help with wide spread survival

So far we have not had any wolf sightings but many friends are reporting seeing them. Prior to the DNR revising their website and wolf numbers increasing they published wolves kill 30k-50k deer annually. Now it’s revised to up to 1/week. Harvest Survey Results will give you an idea of hunters kill per DMU and zone.

Like anywhere deer are found better habit has higher deer numbers. Our habitat is good around here. The migratory deer do not destroy the understory by over browsing it for 6 months every year.

Due to covid our in person Sportsman’s Coalition meeting have been cancelled so I have only met with our biologist one time in January. Our biologist has only called me once with updates but that was early spring. I called him another time but phone conversations are limited interactions. I miss the meetings with the group, they are very informative since one member is a UP advisory group member.

With all that said Mother Nature kills more deer than hunters do.

Most of the U.P. has suffered through 3 bad winters in a row yet the DNR seems to be in denial of that fact for some reason and are pushing hard for herd reduction. Add to that the fact that Indians can kill about as many deer of an sex as they want anywhere in the U.P. and it is not good for a declining deer herd. Predator numbers are now at all time, modern highs including wolves, bears, coyotes and cats. They all eat a lot of deer and the DNR seems to want to allow those predator numbers to increase more. It all adds up to epic missmanagement.

...and boils down to too many keyboards and monitors being worn out and too few boots and snowshoes suffering wear and tear.

It would be easy to blame the local folks but having a little background with the system it is frustratingly understandable why the field folks are, in truth, office jockeys, and recommendations we make at the EUP Sportsmen's Coalition rarely seem to get serious consideration when moved up the chain.

FYI. The EUP Sportsmen's Coalition is a group of individuals and club representatives from the Sault to Drummond, and Newberry to Engadine. FM

Yup..cause the baiting has about stopped maybe 10% of the baiters in the NLP, was at blaskowskis last week, 7th tractor load of beets, 7...record for them....7. Cwd will spread into the UP and it will be only a matter of time. Meanwhile 2 of my friends in Emmet shot small bucks this year, 137 and a 144 inch, terribly small for stateland bow deer. I am hunting there next year. I am just saying if I ran my buisness like they (dnr) ran their buisness I would be out of buisness...supply and demand 101. Anyone who says they don't want to shoot a big buck is a liar. Protecting half of the 1.5 year bucks isn't rock science but heaven forbid you tell someone else what they can shoot...or wear a mask. I think the DNR should not be opening more kill options in the UP because I don't believe there is the population...knee jerk management at its best. I guess all I am saying is people want to shoot big bucks and see more deer, why not fill the demand with supply if the biology supports
