I've hit the dam a couple of times this week and saw someone hook and land a huge walleye. Other than that the river isn't a good location so far this year. The DNR and Consumers have been treating the waters for lamprey
The fishing from below the dam in Newaygo has been horrible. I believe the lamprey treatment going on for the past few days has had a negative impact on the fishing conditions. Nothing biting. I've seen several fish swim by while I was wading and not even so much as a good bite. I've seen a few small trout landed and a nice walleye but nothing else. I covered a lot of water and spent 2 days without connecting with anything.

Yes. Muskegon River was treated on Sunday and Monday by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. I am sure that has to do with some of it as well as low and warm water. At least it was low on Monday when I was there.

That's not good news for fishing later in the month. I recognize that it has to be done though. The Manistee fisherman were very upset when that river was done earlier this year. I hope it doesn't hit Muskegon as hard. Where can I look up the schedule for treating rivers? I may need to change plans for my upcoming trip if all the south western rivers are being done.

Manistee River was done last year and will not be done this year.

It has been a couple years since Muskegon River was done.

USFWS Ludington Biological Station coordinates and conducts these treatments. They publicize in local papers about their treatment plans. You can also contact them directly at:
    https://www.fws.gov/midwest/ludington/index.html

There is no good time to do a treatment if you are an angler. There is a delegate balance with these treatments to maximize lamprey kill, limit non-target fish mortality, avoid warm temperatures, avoid high water, and avoid holiday weeks. That and try to schedule treatment of hundreds of streams annually in all the Great Lakes on both the U.S. and Canadian side.

I do understand your frustration though.

The treatment is done to kill the larval lamprey in the river. They spend time in the soft sediment filter feeding until they go thru a transformation turning into the parasitic adults and then migrating out into the big lake.

Here is my report for Friday evening fish.

    WTH!!!!

Marked a bunch of fish in 120fow 70 down to bottom. Notta!!! Not a hit! Plugs, spoon and even meat rigs. Nothing! Talking about banging your head on a wall! Guys out deep didn't do any better which makes it even worse. So long story short, not a darn thing!
Not sure where to tell you to try or go, maybe Meijers...

I decided to hit a local inland lake. I didn't catch any keepers.
Fishing has been tough for the time of year it is. Usually quite a bit better.
