Most I usually get is 50% - 75% full by weight using a small postal scale I have. To get the best I make sure I leave my big tank in the sun and put the 1lb tanks in a deep freeze overnight. This seems to help.

I think I would get the kit to hook that a BBQ bottle instead of those little one pounders.

That's key. Also in cold temps, you should bring your 20lber inside to warm up. Key is warm 20lber, frozen 1lbers. I get between 90 and 98% refill.

do you guys pull the safety valve on the 1lber? I read that one guy does this to fill his 1lbers.... i'm unsure of the need to do so. seems kinda dangerous to pour out liquid propane.

i'm thinking about getting an adapter myself, them 1lbers aren't cheap anymore.

I do not open the safety valve when filling. I used to do that in the past until I learned to use a warm 20lb tank and frozen 1lb tanks. I actually used a valve stem wrench to open the valves when I used that method. It filled them well but it's not needed using the frozen 1lbers. I get about 90% to 100% using the hot/cold method. I've been filling them for over 30 years.

    I do not open valve.

I used to weigh each one and was always close to new in weight. I exchange out after refilling 3 times. That's just me.

By exchange I mean rotating in new or getting once used containers from my friends, and rotating the old out.
