Another proposal that was made by the state spearing organization was to expand the dates of the current season for yellow perch spearing season on LSC from the current period of 1 January to the end of February. These are the dates of the old northern pike spearing season. When the pike spearing dates were expanded a few years ago, the yellow perch spearing dates were not.

At the April 2016 LE/LSCFAC meeting I proposed that the yellow perch spearing season be expanded to run from 1 December through 15 March. There was and is no opposition to this proposed change from the DNR. Their studies indicate the the harvest of yellow perch by winter spearing makes up a very small percentage of the total annual winter harvest. The LE/LSCFAC board is supportive of this season expansion as they feel the resource is capable of handling it and that more often than not the weather will dictate the length of the actual through the ice season. It is my understanding that DNR Fisheries Division is also supportive of this change.

If there are any developments I will ensure that an update is provided.

That would be GREAT for when those shallow water whales don't want to bite !! Would love to see this one go through. Thanks for the update and what you are doing

    Another excellent opportunity for anglers.

It's nice to see positive change and support of the DNR as well.

It is my understanding from recent emails with Jim Francis, DNR Fisheries Biologist LE/LSC that this proposal will be decided soon by the NRC. I'm not sure exactly when, but have been led to believe that October is likely.

There may be several fisheries issues decided at that time. The DNR will issue press releases regarding any changes. Anyone wishing to receive email notification can sign up for them on the DNR website.

Our proposal has been approved. The new yellow perch spearing season on LSC will be 1 December thru 15 March starting this upcoming season. It is already listed in the Fishing Guide booklets that came out for 2018-19.

Don't "may try", do try. It's a lot of fun. The trick is to spear the little ones, you can eat them fresh without any filleting.
