Another proposal that was made by the state spearing organization was to expand the dates of the current season for yellow perch spearing season on LSC from the current period of 1 January to the end of February. These are the dates of the old northern pike spearing season. When the pike spearing dates were expanded a few years ago, the yellow perch spearing dates were not. At the April 2016 LE/LSCFAC meeting I proposed that the yellow perch spearing season be expanded to run from 1 December through 15 March. There was and is no opposition to this proposed change from the DNR. Their studies indicate the the harvest of yellow perch by winter spearing makes up a very small percentage of the total annual winter harvest. The LE/LSCFAC board is supportive of this season expansion as they feel the resource is capable of handling it and that more often than not the weather will dictate the length of the actual through the ice season. It is my understanding that DNR Fisheries Division is also supportive of this change. If there are any developments I will ensure that an update is provided.
