I been fishing a large UP lake for years, using normal big Rapalas, Spoons, Spinners, etc. But I haven't been catching the logs I used to catch there years ago. Most were under 32" or so. Last year, I learned a secret. Put a 7"-9" perch under a bobber, and jaws isn't just alive, he's hungry! Sometimes the perch are hard to catch, so I'm wondering if I can just toss a couple big thawed frozen smelt on a hook. Or maybe something from the local Asian store? I'm targeting 20+ pound Northern. The largest I've seen caught from this lake was 34 pounds, but that was years ago. There are also Great Lakes Muskie in the lake, but not so easy to catch. I was getting big pike strikes every 30 mins or so, when I could find a perch to use. I'm not sure if there are laws about what dead bait I can use either. Thanks for any info you can share.
