I converted a graph over to ice usage years ago and I didn't see the big deal and always wanted a Vex, but I bought a Ice Hook instead but haven't used it yet, you guys have me anxious to get it into action.

Yeah but it was more on the level of Sputnik rather than a Raytheon spy satellite. I wish I had a pic of it.

Nothing Hi-Tech about my rigs, just a 12 amp SLA 1" RAM mount and the stock XDCR with a plastic articulating arm that fits in a 6 gallon bucket.

Some had LED lights for lure charging or hole watch after dark.

Is the 688ci HD DI a better choice rather than the Helix 7 ice G2 seeing as the 688ci has 450hz compared to the ice 7 G2's 250hz? Im still learning here and don't really know what all that means but i seen you mention 450hz was better for target separation. I see some people mention that the helix wasn't any good for gills and I'm looking for something that will mark everything not just the larger fish.

The 455 kHz has a very narrow cone, which equates to better target resolution at the cost of bottom coverage, the unit is also non- Chirp so it wouldn't "see" as well as a 200 kHz Chirp band unit would at the same 200 kHz frequency.

The 688DI is also discontinued too.

The Ice Helix G2's can go above and below 200 kHz, which is user selectable and @ 250 kHz should do well for target seperation.

    Standard Sonar Frequency:130-250 kHz

I have been considering a Chirp unit myself and selling the 688 ciHD DI.

Do you know if it's possible to run the SI transducer with the Ice 7 G2 in the summer?

The Ice Helix 7 G2 is a Sonar GPS (2D only) , not the same as the Helix 7 SI GPS G2/G2N.

I believe if you have a Helix 7 SI G2 you can update software to the latest & be able to choose the XI 9 1521 Chirp Ice XDCR in the transducer selection menu - under sonar features.

I thought that all the helix 7 units were capable of 2D/DI/SI depending on the transducer being used and their latest software update. I might call hummingbird and just ask before I pull the trigger. I want to use it on my boat in the summer so I'm going to need a transducer anyway.

Sorry ~ your assumption is incorrect, why would the Sonar/GPS, DI/GPS and SI/GPS models vary hundreds in price?

The Sonar only unit cannot work with an SI XDCR to provide imaging, as there are internal hardware as well as just software differences between models.

If you have a G2 SI version, you can run that on the compact or HDSI XDCR.

    https://www.humminbird.com/Products/XI-9-1521/

With the new software update they have added the Chirp Ice transducer and flasher view to the units.

A good online friend & all around HB guru posted software notes on Nov. 2nd online:

HELIX 7 CHIRP SI GPS G2 (Version 1.540)

    Release Date: 10/26/2017

    Description:
    New Features
    Ice Mode added which includes:

Support of the XI 9 1521

Exclusive combination screen views like Flasher/2D Sonar

    CHIRP Interference Rejection

    Improved target separation.

No "real find" Ray - Wayne & I try to post software specs on a regular basis.

I have been pretty tight with coin as of late, so little "R&D" coin available for new units...

    o_O:confused:

I was disappointed my ice ducer wouldn't do DI with my helix 5 di. Also depth will often display incorrect numbers even though the graph shows the correct bottom

Do you have it setup by the HB FAQ for using DI units on an ice XDCR?

    https://www.humminbird.com/faqDetail.aspx?id=9152

It's 200 kHz only, that's why I used the stock XDCR on an articulating arm so I could use 455 kHz 2D in a crowd, and/or DI.
