I picked up a 5 on black friday, with my cabelas bucks it only cost me $240 so i couldnt pass it up for that price.
When you start looking at buying a 7 for regular price its about the same price as the hook 7 and the garmin units. But look at the gps detail on the garmin compared to the others.

A 5 is fine for ice fishing, the boat can be a different story

I just did that myself. Took the one off the bow of the boat and ordered an ice ducer and extra power cable and built my own "ice pack". Took it out Saturday for the first time and it worked great. Way more detail and nicer to look at then the old x67. Will take pic tonight.

An hour or two in the barn with some scrap 1x12 and this is what I came up with. It would fit inside a 5 gallon bucket if you wanted to use it as is. But I bought the empty humminbird bag because i wanted it protected and it looks nicer.

Yep , they sent the press releases out about a week ago.

These should have more software options than currently discontinued Helix models and the new software platform has a lot of room for expansion - like the new 10,000 lakes built in on the basemap. (which can be installed on some older Helix)

I'm kind of stoked to see pricing on the the MDI units, my Mega SI is unreal.

I run a mix of Chirp frequencies on my boat to reduce or eliminate cross talk or interference when I do not choose the same sonar source.
This is going to force the other OEMs to allow the user to adjust frequency band and / or bandwidth as a common option soon.

Expect the price to be higher and very hard to get a deal on one for at least 6-9 months after release since nobody has been able to match the performance to value / bang to buck ratio .

You can see fish targets on a 3 views (likely specks) I took off Croton Pond if front of Croton Bay Trading Post. (the 2D wasn't Chirp BTW)
The increased separation is going to be great on the ice also.
    Very cool stuff.

BTW,I have downloaded both versions of the Basemap for Helix 5-7 and 9-10-12 if someone need a copy it's a 2GB and 9 GB download and you need version 1.460 to install use it.

HB is offering a preloaded SD Card for $24.99 IDK if that includes shipping or not - so that's why I am mentioning it.

I found the helix very difficult to setup. Didn't seem to work well without major tweaking.

    Maybe an installation issue?

They are fairly plug N play - with exception of having to dial in the imaging...

No, ice fishing you generally want the dark screen with light colored marks, saves battery.
Not only do you have sensitivity but a bunch of other added crap with no explanation what it is.

Somewhere I found suggested I've settings online and used that for a guide. Worked decent. Now I'm using it in the boat. So far so good. This weekend will be the first deep water trip though.

My buddies DI looks all pixalated like a 80s video game

We can't his to read fish for nothing. It'll Mark bait though

    That looks horrid.

I'd be mailing a pic of that to HB & asking what they thought...

I don't wast the right side with the color bar, and I would wonder what the settings for that are, or if resetting defaults would look better.

IDK I have even seen "DI" that gritty; something isn't right - almost like they are trying to fire it thru a glass hull or something.

If the XDCR isn't defective, I'd wonder if the control head was...

The way the bottom is blown out, it looks like settings are jacked out of whack.
If that's a green pallet - the bottom shouldn't be a different color.

With the latest updates, most guys don't read how you can control sens & freq from the +/- & check keys - so if they never open a menu it can get jacked up.

I know I had reset it back to defaults and it didn't help very much.

Mine worked great today over deep water. I'm going to use my settings on my buddies and see if we can't sort it out
