Smelt aren’t what they were 10 years ago but you can find them and coax a bite better than 3 years ago.

I’ve been hitting 60fow with a glow hali. They have been biting super light. When your rod moves rip their lips off. We’ve been averaging about one every 10 minutes per person.

Fished the west launch from 2pm until 11 pm Saturday. Managed a few dink perch, a couple decent perch, and 5 smelt in 50 fow. I guess that's why they call it fishing!

We got into some smelt the last two nights, probably 35-40 each time. Caught a handful of what we thought were huge smelt... 8-10”. But now in wondering if they’re smelt. I have no idea what the herring look like... do they look like huge smelt? [IMG]

looks like bottom 4 are smelt, bottom jaw go to top of eyeball, plus they smell like smelt. top ones are herring which u should have kept alive for tip-ups. plus smelt have tiny teeth. just my nickels worth without having them in hand. bill

Thanks for the pointers guys. Ref. the cleos. I did bounce bottom and it kept the fish returning. They're fairly heavy, but not the best geometry for jigging. Gonna probably hit it tomorrow. What time would Bill be open on a Monday?

Clean the herring like perch, the scales are to big to eat. Like Bill said, those small herring are THE bait for Lakers.
