That's an interesting point. In a way a gasoline tax tries to accomplish the same end. But the mechanism which it uses is significantly different. In Michigan, we don't have to contend with a concessioners toll booths. That's a positive. Also a gasoline tax is earned by those who buy fuel for other uses. Lawn equipment, chainsaws etc. Looking down the road. There is going to be a point where wealthier motorist will be using alternate energy sources. There by using the highways without paying for them via gasoline taxes. Hopefully, we won't end up killing each other over it.
That would be my solution. But I imagine the engineers will come up with something more complicated (greener) and more expensive before too long.
Registration costs are already a joke. I drive a truck I've paid more to register when added up than I did for the truck.

Install one at your house and tell us how much it costs in total. I’ve volunteered the only price point I have.
I just did a design of the civil work for charging stations. In order get the 10 min charge, you need to find a 350kw charger. Those things per the electrical engineer are like 100,000 just for the charger. Then you have to have the infrastructure to connect them which takes an 1180kv line to a transformer. Then you also have to buy the power and control unit for each charger. I believe that is what is needed to connect a 350 kw charger. Someone can corrected if i am wrong. A standard 4.2kV line (2400V phase to neutral) to a transformer will do the trick - and pole pigs aren't super expensive. Charger cost - that I can't speak to.
