I was wondering if anyone has frozen smelt whole and cleaned them right before they ate them instead of cleaning them and freezing them. Wanted to see if it still tasted good and if it affected the meat. Thanks

Never did it but seems it would be too mushy to clean after thawing. Now cleaned, frozen and then thaw to cook would be ok.

I tried it years ago. If you just rinse them 2-3 times and put them in a bag of water whole and .freeze them up. I left some for 5-6 mos. and didn't care for them. I did it again and only left them 2-3 mos. and they were good.
