I know of places near Ypsilanti on the Huron river that have good numbers of crayfish, but I have been hesitant to try to harvest them because I'm not sure if they are safe to eat. Is water quality something that should be taken into consideration when trapping crayfish for table fare?

Now for my questions on getting into the hobby:

    - What types of traps are best suited for trapping in rivers, and why? (DIY options preferred)
    - What type of water should I be looking at for optimal results? Depths, current speeds, underwater features?
    - Is it legal to transport them home alive so that I can flush them for a couple of days?
    - Are there certain times of year, or weather conditions that are best?

Thanks in advance for any advice
