Yikes. Havent heard anything like it before. Unless there was a ton of them, I'm not sure we would notice around here. We see them fairly often as it is.

This has been a periodic occurrence in both Lake Michigan and Lake Huron over the past 20 years. Usually it appears to be tied to botulism toxin that cycles through the food web and involves quagga or zebra mussels, round gobies, other fish, and often fish eating birds. Watch for sick and dead loons to start turning up too. You can google search and find lots of press and agency reports that document these kinds of die-offs from all around the Great Lakes over the last couple decades. It seems to be worst during warmest summers and the big lakes sure warmed up early this summer.
