Nasty weather, less people willing to do any traveling, few deer in the UP. Is that number surprising for this year?
Weather was nasty but deer have been on their feet at all hours of the day everyday around here. My UP Deer Camp Survey observations have already exceeded the past 3 season totals and we have not hit the second week yet. Lots of does and fawns are around. Older buck sightings have been zero but that doesn’t mean one won’t step out at any minute. I’ve been fortunate. I have not had a wolf observation but that will change with the migration. No sign of that taking place this month.
Would be interesting to see that number compared to the # of crossings. I know our camp was only 4 people this year because of the virus and it is usually 10-12. A couple of the camps near us were completely shut down.
Bridge crossing data is only delayed by a few months. Deer harvest stats are delayed by 8-9 months. Covid definitely has an impact but how much will never be known.
Unfortunately I only saw doe. I assume there must be some bucks. Opening day was horrid. I talked to many locals. Not many deer sighted and I can tell you the number of shots I heard from Opening day until Sunday the 22 were far and few in between. I saw numerous tracks indicating wolf and large feline in the area. Also saw a bear still out and about. The area is getting ready to be cut and the gentleman doing the pre work said he did see a cougar. I'm hoping the DNR will halt the taking of doe during archery season. I for one think its ridiculous that they allow it. Something needs to be done to get the EUP back to having bucks to harvest.
A start is contacting the NRC prior to voting in their changes for the UP. Not much time left for that.
