Glad you all liked the hunt and the video. The TV show will even better. It's not a cheap trip by any stretch, like others have said; get to the island, bring a car to the island, rent a house on the island, get to the outer islands. I would recommend it to anyone but, it's a commitment and weather that time of year can be really bad and you should plan to be flexible.

Nice video but I have some comments. It was very nice to see a bird hunting video where everybody was wearing lots of blaze orange. I see too many examples of just the bare minimum, and for bird hunting that makes no sense. On the other hand that small boat was dangerously overloaded with no PFDs either.

This recorded on my DVR's "grouse" wishlist. It is on the outdoor channel. It is a great episode. I want to do it, all it takes is money.

Looks like 3 hunters and 2 dogs got 4 grouse over 3 days. But who knows how long they were there because they have to edit it down to show all the action.

I actually just got back from up there on Sunday. 4 day hunt and the weather sucked. I think we shot 4 woodcock and missed a few grouse. There were plenty of birds it’s just the weather is very unpredictable in the middle of the lake this time of year. As I said in my earlier post My family has a place up there so trips up there aren’t out of the ordinary for me. Had a couple of guys stay up and really got into the birds on Monday after the weather cleared. Again If you’re looking to just hunt birds I would recommend the UP over the island. There’s more ground to hunt and it’s easier and more economical to get to. If you like the idea of flying over/ taking the fairy to an island and hunting just for the experience then I would totally recommend it but there’s a lot of sentimental value for me up there so it’s different. Bird numbers can change drastically year to year so don’t go there expecting to be over run by them although they seemed to be plentiful this year.

We were up there last week with Jimmy Gretzinger and the Michigan Out of Doors team. Hunting was pretty good. Had to fight some tough weather. Last year there was more cover up and tougher shooting. We killed a few more this year. The show will air next week.

    I decided I won't do a Beaver Island hunt.

Grouse hunting is difficult enough without having to fly or boat into those Islands where the hunting is probably no better than the U.P. where at the end of a long day in the field I can drive back to a rented house, eat a nice meal and drink a few beers check the internet and watch TV. There are so few upland hunters now-a-days that it is rare to see another like minded hunter unless you are at a GEMS hunting area.

I probably could spend less doing a fancy Pheasant hunt in S.D. and have easy shots at slow flying jumbo jet sized birds in open fields.

Hunting on the island is different then on the mainland. Old growth and lots of down trees. You go for the experience not the wealth of birds

That is true RCA, we were up for 4 days and were only able to do the other island 2 of those days and one of them we fought 4-8 waves to get there. It's kind of like going to Alaska.

There is certainly better hunting in the NLP and UP with easier shooting. Birds are in the big woods with conifers, which can make for some tough dog work but as Clark Griswold once said, "It's all part of the experience". lol
