Alright, I was planning on waiting until next weekend to plant my food plots, My big plots I'm going to plant 1 in oats/WW and the other in rye/WW. Life thru me a curve ball and I might have to fly up this Sunday to plant. Do you think that is going to be to early? I'm up in Mio area. Thanks for any advise
I planted some rye last weekend. Going to seed more Labor day weekend. If you have good deer numbers, they will keep it mowed. I plant earlier to try slow wiping out my turnips. Also as cover crop for clover and alfalfa.
Each post above has a good reason to plant now and wait. My experience has been if I plant Rye or Oats this early, they tend to be too long and less desirable by October. But if life has thrown you that curve ball, better now than never. Good luck and shoot straight.
Can rye be mowed before it gets to long? To preserve it for later in the season. Not to hijack the thread but I have always wondered this when concerned about planting too early.
