Thanks for starting this thread and posting the link. I believe everone should take a few minutes and read " When hunting became shooting " . One of my favorites , in fact it should be made a sticky as it Hits the nail right on the head. Another one is " The hundred year-old man "

Fantastic and sobering all at the same time.

The bravest and most honest among us will look past what the other guys are doing and see ourselves. I'm looking forward to how this thread plays out. I will definitely be following it and offering comments on some of the particulars that I identify with.

You advertised a "must read" opportunity, it is. I'll piggy back on that by suggesting it's also a "must understand" opportunity.

Not owning any of his books ,and only some articles ..But having read others ; I have enjoyed Archibald Rutlage's writings.
Very different type hunting ,( plantation, dogs, horses ect.)but no less an observer of deer and hunters. From his earliest youth. A pet buck lifting him from his (cradle?) when he held it's antlers (?) Watching them at night from elevated perches. His own dads long run of hunting them.

Antlers stayed on the plantation. Many ,many generations of them.
Letters between he and a son in college were interesting. Might have been the son who later died in a wreck...

A reply from the son following his fathers poetic letter stating he was going to "roll" deer with his shotgun for his son , he (a teacher himself) was encouraging his son to put aside education briefly to partake in the annual tradition(s).

I'm probably not going to remember correctly his sons response reassuring his father ,but I'll try.

"When red leaves fall in October days ,tis then I change my peaceful ways.
To kill a buck I'm all hell bent by heredity and environment.
To peace and love I'm fully blinded .I'm full capacity killer minded".

    Archibald and sons in picture.

The bucks that these guys pass up are beast here in Michigan. If you get the chance to watch the crooked hat chronicles there is a segment in there. Simply unbelievable. Hats off to Gene and Barry. They have the up most respect for deer. The way it should be. Not " Ditch Goats" lol

I'll say one thing about Gene Wensel's article....he doesn't mince any words. While there is certainly a lot of truth in what he writes - most of which I agree with, the absolute truth of the matter can be found in one sentence in the next to the last paragraph:

"In truth, what you are reading here would never be seen published in any mainstream outdoor media because it would piss off multiple advertisers enough for them to jump ship."

I'm sure Gene would also agree that his statement about "tax deductible breast implants" would also be considered sexist and offensive to female hunters.

Not sure I would consider it a "must read" Dish, but it was interesting. :)
