9 1/2 year old doe Spruce Michigan

A guy I work with shot one with his bow up that way a few years back that came back at 11.5. I didn't believe it until he showed me the report. They live quite a while longer than bucks from what I have read, naturally. Obviously most get shot before that anyway.

 

Wow...that is an old doe. And, that's only a few miles from the neighborhood that I hunt. Congratulations to your nieces husband! Any other details on the doe? Like weight?

 

She's a dandy. Did they happen to get a weight on her?

 

Nice doe! I shot one they aged at 8.5 in Montmorency County years back but it wasn’t remarkably big.

I shot one with a muzzleloader in 2004 the DNR aged at 10 1/2.

If you watch the deer reports there are always a couple really old ones. I never guessed that deer even lived that long.

Another weird thing to me is for does, age related to body size seems to be a worthless comparison.

 

Agree. Size is not a strong predictor of age in my experience. I've also never killed a really old doe (4YO max). Perhaps too sly for me. I'll keep trying!

Nice. Getting harder and harder to find in some areas. I shot two that were aged at 8.5 and 9.5 over the last 20 years. Most are 2.5 to 3.5 in our area. Smart animals when they make it that long. Been picked off at 75-80 yards by some swamp donkey does in the past. They just "knew" something wasn't right by looking at me.

 

You mean they don't put on 20ish pounds every year till they die?
