Success rates will go up for some. This is a hound hunter bait...unless you want to watch cars when you hunt. I’m a hound hunter, so I’m just letting you know. If you don’t know the difference between 2 barrels and 30, I guess I don’t understand. Placing a barrel every mile or two will...

The reason is simple. They hold bears in a small area. The barrels that are the most effective have one one inch hole and filled with corn and fryer grease. I ran my dogs off a few of these ( on private, friends bait). The bears just hang there. The bait doesn’t run out. It’s a continuous...

Barrels passed, most people should not be happy. This will benefit a few big hound groups. Everyone else bait or hound should be hurt by this. Barrels must be on state land( not CFA or Federal). The MUST be 100 yards or CLOSER to a state forest road. I’m a hound hunter. This will...

    Wow, really nice work!

I kind of agree about keeping the sound science out of the mix...sorry. I still would like someone to explain to me why and how the barrel recommendation passed? It benefits large hound groups and no one else. It adds a multitude of enforcement related problems as well as user group...

Bingo! Expand the use of barrels! I was waiting for such a response. That’s actually the most dangerous reason there is to oppose. I don’t think people understand how this baiting method holds bears. If you want to really mess up bear hunting, this is the way. The larger holes are not...

This very reckless revision has been advocated by a few indviduals for ten years. It barely passed, without the sunset clause, Commisioner Creagh was a no vote. As far as I can decipher, only two commissioners were a for sure yes. Sound Science, there isn’t any that I can see? I want...

The reason it’s odd is this is exclusively for dog hunters. I’m a dog hunter but this is not a good idea in my opinion. There are lots of reasons not to allow corn shakers. The biggest reason is to protect the bear population. With all the technology we use ( both bait and dog hunters ) do...

Not for trash barrels, there can only be up to three one inch holes in the barrel...common name is corn shaker. Back in 2009 the barrel advocate(s) pointed out dog/wolf conflicts. Wolves can’t get into the bait. What’s even more compelling this year is we are saving the deer herd from CWD by...

The new bait barrel regulation is kind of odd in my opinion. The barrels have to be on state land, not CFA or Federal. That’s not really earthshaking! This is what is; The barrels have to be 100 yards from a state forest road or CLOSER? This regulation was trying to get passed since 2009...

Just want to point out, no one is licensed to guide in Michigan. This is a list of people that have a state land use permit. Use of State Land, federal forest would be a different permit...private lands it’s not nessesary and CFA it’s not allowed.

    Bears don’t circle baits

Lots of bears hibernate in mid September in the UP and similar. A few males and sows with cubs can be up now. Eating this time of year is rare..bears have to stop eating and drink large amounts of water so they don’t winterkill. Probably the same bear or sow with cubs eating. I assume it’s...

I see this more and more! Screwing up your meat and dragging out extra weight. That's just plain stupid....sorry. Your bear isn't any bigger because you didn't take care of the carcass asap. It's like hanging it on a buck pole...you just can't do it to a bear without decomposition. So...

Originally any person that tagged along with a hound hunter was required to purchase a no kill tag. I believe this was to limit the interest in the sport. Since then it changed. When my son was young and he wanted to take a friend the friend would be required to buy a no kill...stupidity...

I doubt if bear genetics come into play in any state in the country. Bergland and Baraga are starting to bounce back..a steady harvest quota is sound management. Over harvest sure screwed us over a few years back. I hate to see it happen again. Mismanagement was real, over harvest was the...

If a deer can move your "logs" you need to protect your bait better. Hollow stumps.
