  1. Lk. St. Clair and St. Clair River
Passed the Viking Octantis while cruising up the St. Marys in August.
  2. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
I'm sure we were. I started on D-dock in 1999 and eventually wound up at the end of C-dock until about 2013 or maybe 2014. Boat was 30' Sea Ray, "Play Dough". We were near Gary Smith (Rodmaster) in the early years until he moved up and out. I always assumed the benefit to fishing for...
  3. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
We slipped and fished out of Harborview for 15 years and watched all the charter activities around town. I could never understand the attraction to that business. I kind of tested those waters once with gratis trips for friends and friends of friends over a few day period. I was so beat after...
  4. Cold Water Species Fishing
Economy on that vintage of Weekender with v-drives was much worse than the I/O's of the Sundancer. I kept very detailed records of my fuel usage over the 10 years I owned the boat and averaged about 5 gallons/hour overall. Most of those years were in Ludington so usage varied depending on...
  5. Cold Water Species Fishing
For pure fishing, my choice would be a Tiara 31 Open. For my needs, the 1989 Sea Ray 300 Sundancer that I had was hard to beat for a family fish boat. It was a comfortable cruiser that fished well. Room to sleep 4 easily and a flat deck to fish on. Twin 5.7L Alpha power was quite economical...
  6. Detroit River and Lake Erie
My son lived in North Dakota for several years. The white pelicans migrate through there every year. Nothing unusual about it.
  7. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
I talked to DNR personnel about the rods/person regulation some time ago (back when it was 2 rods/person). Their position had to do with the concept of "fair chase". I could see that argument to a point but doubt a boat could run enough lines to tip that scale. He did admit creel limits is...
  8. Saginaw Bay and its Tributaries
That's a great fish. Way back in 1975, I caught a mess of jumbos off Sebewaing on the ice in Saginaw Bay. The largest was 16 1/4" and had a few others over 15". Never seen anything close to that since.
  9. Lk. St. Clair and St. Clair River
I've seen as many boats full of downriggers and rods on the rocks as pleasure boats. That would include charter boats as well. Pilot error isn't reserved for the cocktail crowd.
  10. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
I've trolled plugs off the mouth a couple times with no luck. I haven't seen a salmon landed out there the few times I've been out. There's only a half dozen trolling boats at the most. I pulled spoons a little ways out this morning looking for the reported lakers in the area. That didn't...
  11. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
The river and harbor entrance appear to be full of salmon now. I didn't fish salmon this morning, but saw several fish porpoise here and there all the way out to the outer channel buoys. The most activity was in the area near the county marina.
  12. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
I recently moved to Cheboygan and after a month of moving activity, found the time to get out on the lake a few times the past week or so. I'm still in search mode, but have found a couple fish. My boat limits my big lake activity to fair weather so trips are limited to those days. I had a...
  13. Warm Water Fishing Inland LP Lakes
Burt to Mullet via the Indian River. It's a busy waterway and takes a while to get through at no wake speed. From Mullet via the Cheboygan River and lock to Lake Huron if you want to run the entire Inland Waterway.
  14. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
I'm moving to the area in a couple weeks. Looking forward to learning the fishery. I have some experience on Mullet Lake and further north in the Straits.
  15. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
I was admiring that awesome fish, but then I noticed the shorts...
  16. Warm Water Fishing Inland LP Lakes
Maybe...but that would surprise me. Most shopping carts I see are loaded with a lot of items outside of meat. We have various meats in our freezer for months whereas milk, bread, produce, etc., require a visit to the store every couple weeks. So, unless your diet is exclusively fish, you...
  17. Warm Water Fishing Inland LP Lakes
James, just for your future reference...Department of Natural Resources. DNR not D&R.
  18. General Discussion
Had a chat with a doctor one day about a couple minor nagging issues. His response was, "You know, there's nothing wrong with you that quitting smoking won't cure." He prescribed medicine that got me over the hump and I have never regretted that move for the last 19 years (Memorial Day 2001)...
  19. Warm Water Species Fishing
I'd just appreciate the SOS mailing my watercraft registration. They charged my account on 4/3 and here we are 3 weeks later and nothing. In the interim, I applied, paid and received a car plate tag within the same period.
  20. Cold Water Species Fishing
The embellishment just detracts from your point, which I empathize with. I don't know of too many people that dine on $15/lb. meats, although those people probably exist, and I've had zero issues with buying meat. Cleaning products? Yes. Food items? No.
