Think about how to make it easy to grip when wet or you get a hand covered in fish slime. Maybe it's a little checkering. Or some inlayed rings or spiral wrap of some kind of rubberized materials. Think of the carbon handled steelhead rods that usually have something added.
  2. Warm Water Fishing Inland UP Lakes
The water will basically be the same temperature as what’s flowing out of Superior, so pretty cold compared to inland lakes in the UP. You should be able to find some warmer water in Munuscong in the shallows. The only weed growth you’ll probably find are standing reeds that didn’t get...

Don’t leave us hanging. How was lunch?
  4. Warm Water Species Fishing
At 40 degrees and warmer it's a lot easier to get reaction bites out of them, and they are easier to catch outside of their feeding periods. If the water is really clear, fish low light periods.
  5. Lk. St. Clair and St. Clair River
Look at the area around the Colony Tower. Nice big, wide, deep canals. It will put you close enough to the lake to frequent it as much as the river. But if you are in that area, forget about fishing the mile roads or the south Canadian shore unless it's a calm day. You'll quickly learn to...

The OP was asking for what's best, not what's good enough. Normally I'm using boards for things that fight much more violently than walleye, so I bought the kits to replace the plastic ones when they break. Thought it would be a good idea to have some spare parts in the tackle box.

No idea where the best place to buy these is now. I got the pin upgrade kits for $5 each at the ultimate fishing show in GR a good while back from a vendor.

Church board with the stainless pin upgraded. Put a speed bead on the line if you don't want to the board to run all the way down to the swivel when a big fish hits. Take the board off after you land the fish instead of in the middle of the fight.
  9. Icefishing LP inland lakes and rivers
I've been using a tool tote like this as a specialized tackle box for things that don't fit well in regular tackle boxes. Works great for a combination of small things in all the external and internal pockets, plus plenty of space for bigger or heavier items or more small boxes. The open tip...
  10. Lk. St. Clair and St. Clair River
The Folbes bend enough under load that it would be really easy for a down rod to pop out. They are really strong, but designed for a heavy load pulling down on the rod like with a downrigger setup and not a heavy load pulling backwards.
  11. Big Lake Cold Water Fishing Reports
Lake Huron is still 4" above it's average January water level. A lot of places are overdue for dredging. Late fall they were dredging the harbor at Caseville.

Looks like about 15 pounds of jerky to me.

All they had to do was to tell Goff to throw the ball hard on every pass and stop with the interceptions.
  14. General Discussion
I think most of us would be fine with stiffer penalties across the board. But you have to start somewhere. For recreational over-limit violations there's usually a base fine of a couple hundred dollars on top of it. I think I've seen cases of $100 per fish levied, but when looking up some...

Anything with a wire keepers unless you want to go through a ton of plastics.

Where'd you go, @Biggbear ? We'd like to hear your thoughts on equal penalties for all fish take violations.

You are already backtracking by acknowledging digital controls being added now that we're not 1970s trolling motor technology. There are also brushless trolling motors on the market now, a d they have been there for several years. That was something you specifically mentioned earlier that...
  19. Boating and Boat Rigging
If you think 24/12V trolling motors from the 1970s is state of the art today, then you've got a lot more googling to do, Jeeves. And why do they have you working on the weekend?
