The gills seem to nenoff their beds. Catching them with surface fly/poppers.
Have never even seen a bowfin. Pretty cool. Didn't know they were in my lake.

Fought some nice ones tonight on the fly rod off the dock. Spotted popper with legs. Gills came all the way out of the water for them.

Just bought some at Sand Lake Party store if your looking. they usually have them and they are not far from long.
I don't know how to fish them on their beds at all. We went out from the beds to about 8ft. of water and did well with night crawlers. We couldn't...
I wish I could say I new the temp... they were guarding mostly... I think there may have been females laying eggs. I have never seen it before but...
