These places are half-way between Mio and Grayling. Take M-33 north past Grayling, and just before it curves east into M-72, you turn left onto North Down River Rd and head west to the North Branch. One of the best books to pick up is the "Trout Unlimited Challenge Chapter" Au Sable River Guide Books. They are expensive, but give a detailed description and location of almost every public access point on the main streams.

The trout season is over now, but past reports show there have been some big trout caught in the river below the Mio dam. If I were you, I'd pay a visit to Bob Linsenman's fly shop that is on the north end of Mio. You can pick up some good flies, and get some good info there. Here is the web site: http://www.ausableangler.com/

I was fishing on the North Branch of the Au Sable below Kellogg's Bridge on North Down River Road. It is a flies only section of the river, and I was using a Royal Coachman Streamer. If you toss this streamer into some of the holes, near logs, anywhere you think I fish is hiding, you'll probably catch one.

Even fishing right off the access at Morley Road, you might be able to catch one.

Travel north on M-65 north of Hale, just past river rd a sign points to loud Drive, take it to the dead end, the road runs next to 5 channel pond (AuSable River). You come to the dam drive over and all there is a sand beach for a ramp. better have 4 WD as I got stuck there in my impala a year ago. I was lucky another guy came by and helped me out. This is like 20 miles west of Oscoda

I don't have a pic. I got it from baldwin bait and tackle (BBT) website. fishbaldwin.com. look up indy rig. I tie on a dryfly about a foot and half up the tag end of the line with a cinch knot. leaving a tag end 18 inches long. then tie on a sinking nymph on the end.

Hey Ian, good to hear from you. I havent donr much fishin at all. I am headin to manistee for some salmon on the 9th and coming back on the 14th. Its our yearly trip and it cant come fast enough. My summer was so busy I didnt really fish that much. As far as getting spooled goes, I know the feeling. Maybe you had a early king come up and you hooked but this time of year I would have bet it was a carp, unless you saw it of course. Did you know what kind of fish it was? Let me know how you do at fletchers. And it is almost steelie time on the huron, so we will have to get out. Ttyl.
