Pros:
- Fast map/image rendering and screen switching
- Fast satellite signal acquisititon
- All-you-can-download $29.95 per-year subscription for obtaining 7.5 minute quad maps, charts, and images.
- Nice unit size for taking along hunting, fishing, hiking, camping
Cons:
- You'll invest manual study and practice time to become proficient with the receiver and Topo USA PC software. Some Topo USA features challenging to learn.
- Screen small (2.3 inches diagonal) compared to other handhelds.
The DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 handheld GPS is perfect for the hunter or fisherman to tag along almost anywhere. Its small unit size will make you find room for it in any pack.
The color LCD is easy to read and shows great details. It quickly and easily shows layered maps of street level, USGS topo maps, and satellite imagery automatically depending on the zoom level used. Its Cartesio chipset renders the maps quickly and accurately.

The buttons are well laid out and intuitive to use. My only complaint about them is that they are not backlit and you may experience problems navigating menus in the dark until you memorize the button locations.
I was able to get the unit to display accuracy (as reported by the unit) down to +-6ft and using the satellite imagery on the unit, I was able to verify what the unit was reporting since it showed me standing on the sidewalk in front of my house on the map. The unit quickly locks onto satellites both on cold and warm starts. I was difficult to get a WAAS lock that I could hold onto in my northern latitude, but occasionally I was able to get it to happen. The accuracy I got from the unit was fine with or without a WAAS lock. The GPS provides accurate elevation readings and an electronic compass that works even when standing still.
Satellite acquired with WAAS lock
I tested the unit with a 1GB SD card which held plenty of data but the unit supports up to 32GM cards, which would hold lots of imagery of your choice.
The PN-40 supports advanced geocaching out of the box and makes a fine navigating partner around town quickly finding points of interest by category. It will draw and come up with turn by turn instructions on how to get from where you are to any of these points.
Local Points of Interest

Route found to POI
Local Fast Food Joints
The place where the Earthmate really shines for the hunter and fisherman starts with the Topo USA 8.0 software for your computer. This software along with the available downloads from Delorme will let you scout for new hunting spots from your PC. Download the same topo and satellite imagery on the GPS and you are ready to go find the spots you scouted in at home. The Topo USA software lists hundreds of state game areas and boat launches in all states. Another “nice to have” feature is the built in “best hunting and fishing times” for a given day and place.
Best Hunting and Fishing Times
All things considered this is a great GPS for the hunter/fisherman. Its IPX-7 rated water resistance allows you to take it out with you in the foul weather when you need it the most. With the layers of imagery, you’d be hard pressed to get lost with a PN-40. You can always correlate where you are standing to satellite imagery. The PN-40 also has a neat 360 degree screen rotation so you get an image that makes sense no matter what direction you are heading. No more walking the field with your GPS held 180 degrees when you are walking south!

I picked up one of theses at the at the Woods-N-Water News weekend Expo for a pretty good price (Better'n Cabelas) I had never seen something like this before, and I'm anxious to try it out - Because it's coated in rubber, I'm scheming how to affix it to the side of my 7MM Rem Mauser by the scope for a little gun action too....I'll post my tests as It progresses

I took my own independent video using this product on an indoor target range at 15 yards shown above. Using Lumenock arrow nocks is recommended by the manufacturer and really makes the arrow show up in flight. I used a Lumenock in this video.
I really enjoyed reviewing this product. It was easy to setup in the hole for a stabilizer on the bow. The bow I tested it with was a Bowtech Guardian which is a real smooth shooter. You do have to remember not to drop your bow immediately after the shot as in classic archery form.
The camera turns on with one push of a button and is in standby. Push another button and you are "live". Wherever you point your bow is where the camera will be aimed.
Both waterproof and shockproof in a rubberized and o-ring protected case, I can't wait to use this camera to film by exploits this fall. My hunting buddies will no I'm not lying now

These things are the real deal folks. Had some web work to do so I decided to fire one of these up and work on my mosquito infested deck with my laptop. It works as advertised. After 5-10 minutes there was a very noticeable reduction in the mosquitoes. After 15 minutes a mosquito was hard to find in the 15x15 zone that this thing clears out.
The carrying case is a plus as it makes this unit easy to transport and fasten to a tree limb. It does not interfere with the operation of the unit in the least.
While I have yet to try it hunting, the Realtree Hardwoods camo and scent free operation will make this a no brainer to throw in my pack. No more flailing away at the bugs and getting busted by the game.

These Rage broadheads were my first choice after doing some research. I like the idea that there is no loss in energy to open the blade. It's also got a great cutting width and has killed the only deer I shot one at.
Love them so far.
