The Muskegon River

information.jpg (10794 bytes)
The Muskegon River below Croton Dam is from 2 to 10 feet deep and of varying wading difficulty.  Below Croton Dam the river is stocked heavily with brown and rainbow trout.  While the water warms in spots during the dog days of summer, good fishing can be found and most days and extended fishing seasons are in effect (see DNR website).

This is big water where you can practice your long casts.  There is lots of room to spread out, so if you see lots of cars, don't despair.  Get your long and fine tippets out as there is room for them and the fish can be very picky since they have seen just about everything possible thrown at them.

Good access points are at Pine Avenue on the north side, and Thornapple Avenue on the south side of the river.  Pine Avenue is a little trickier to wade, as there are large rocks to navigate and deeper holes nearby.  Thornapple is a very wide area with flatter river bottom providing easier wading.

See our fish stocking page for the number of fish the DNR puts in here annually.  It is quite substantial.
