The Little Manistee River

The Little Manistee river may be smaller than it's big brother, but it should not be ignored by anyone "out for trout".

Between Spencer and Johnson's bridges the water has been designated as flies only with special creel and size limits as well.  My fishing has been limited exclusively to this area and the special restrictions keep the fish population at levels where fun can be had almost any night.

My favorite spot is near Indian bridge where there is a small national forest pull off and campground.  Wooden stairs lead down to the river.   Private property borders on both sides upstream and downstream from there so stay in the water.  Wading is easy.  I have had good luck with caddis imitations and small midges, but as anywhere this varies widely with what's hatching.  Be sure to visit the weir during the month of October to see the spawn taking operation.

Another excellent area to fish is below 9 mile bridge.  There is lots of federal land, the river is very scenic and fish can be caught by the careful angler.

The book Trout Steams of Michigan shown here provides a good description of the rest of the river.  The book can be ordered simply by clicking on it's image to the left.

Michigan Trout Streams a Fly-Angler's Guide also gives an excellent description of the Little Manistee and can be ordered by clicking on it's image to the left.
