| The Manistee River's headwaters are near the
more famous AuSable. But in no way should the Manistee take
a back seat to Michigan's more famous river.

High above the river at Sawdust Hole
The upper Manistee above the Sharon area is the most well known and fished part of the
river. It is easily wade-able and has excellent populations of brook, brown, and
rainbow trout.
Further down the river below the Hodenpyle and Tippy dams the Manistee becomes a very
large river and can be hard to wade, but not impossible as seen in the picture above.
This water is mainly known for its steelhead and salmon fishing. It is also
stocked
heavily with browns by the DNR. Fishing during the fall and spring
runs can be hot. Spreading out below the Tippy dam is
recommended unless you prefer "combat fishing".

The book to the left contains a fine description of the Manistee and how to fish
it, from its headwaters to its lower reaches.
