I fished the river again tonight from 4:00 pm to dark. Iced two 15 inch walleyes and a couple of 7-8" perch. Fishing pressure is really light during the week. (Only 1 group within 300 yards in either direction tonight). I was fishing Just North of the Z-bridge.

Thanks for the very up-to-date report! How's the ice holding up on the river there by the way?

Well the ice is in pretty good shape. 5 to 8 inches of good blue ice where I've been going. There is a Lot more from the Carlton area to Wickes park. I'm guessing 8-10" but I never go down there. ( Just during the first Ice phase when the rest of the river is still open). There is a lot of slush on top of the ice today but I would say we have at least a week or two before it's time to get the boat out! (Traditionally the ice breaks up a week or so after Valentines day.)~Rick

Steve, I just got my film developed and I have a bunch of pictures of eyes, none of which I want to post on this site. (They are just shot lying on the floor and aren't really cool.) I do have a really nice photo of the steelhead I got last Sunday. I wouldn't mind posting it. So If you are interested leave your email and I'll send that out Tuesday when I have access to a scanner. Thanks Rick

Email it to webmaster@michigan-sportsman.com, or if you have access to space on the internet somewhere where you can upload the pictures, you can post them here yourself using the instructions found on this board under HELP.

Weez, I have caught some real nice perch just south of the Z bridge. When the walleye fishing slowed down a bit I went to perch fishing. I fished the bay Tuesday and Friday, its excellent this year. Hopefully we will get another good run of walleye in the river before season closes. If you are fishing the river now, you have it all to your self. Nice not having all the crowds.

Kingfisher, I know exactly where you are fishing. It has always been a good spot to catch perch. In fact the habitat in that hole actually holds the perch there better than the eyes. Until this year nobody even fished that spot for eyes!!!!(Including myself). Oh and by the way the big ones are yet to be had! Last year I landed a bunch of 4 to 7 pound hawgs the last few days of season.(With a boat of coarse). One of my fishing partners lost back to back 10+ pounders one morning. (< 4 minutes apart!).
As for me I won't be fishing the eyes much longer this winter cause I got bite by the steelhead bug. Yeah it's a terrible disease the doctors say there's no cure:-)
