Question

I am relatively new to ice fishing and wanted to get some opinions on what is the best time of day to catch fish through the ice. Also does fishing after dark usually produce fish or is it more of a morning and evening thing. I usually fish for perch, walleye, crappie, and pike while ice fishing.

I'm not from Michigan but I imagine best fishing times are the same all over. The best fishing times for me have been early morning and late afternoon and evening for most fish. There are times when you can catch fish all day and sometimes midday seems to be better especially perch and bluegill. Pike seem to be day feeders also. Crappie usually bite better in low light or no light (night) as do walleyes. Hope I've been helpfull.

Fish

I'd hate to be out anywhere today without a shanty and a very good heater.

Thumbs Up

You've already been given so great tips. If your new to ice fishing you should consider going with someone experienced for the first few times. Just as a safety precaution. Just a suggestion.

Wink

jnpcook,
Where I ice fish in central MI, I fish for crappie, bluegill, & pike. Crappie usually bite best about an hour before daylight until a couple hours after then about 1 hour before dark. Bluegills from daylight for about 2-3 hours then start again about a hour before dark. Same with the walleyes here. Pike I seem to do my best throughout the rest of the day. But I always set a "guard tipup" close by whenever I'm fishing panfish. What I've suggested to you USUALLY works for me but if you had to live on what I've brought home this season so far you'd be on a starvation diet.
