help with GLoomis
I have got a new GLoomis 9 foot steelhead rod as a birthday present. It’s a nice rod (Fast/Medium-Heavy), but has the Michigan handle which makes it almost impossible to cast with both hands. The different types of handle are not available for that particular model (STR1085S-SK). I believe it was designed for drifting flies or eggs in a river but I do the majority of fishing by casting from the break walls or piers. I have 2 options; ever replace the handle with something usable or downgrade to 8.6 foot (Fast/Medium) rod. Which one should I choose? I have also talked to GLoomis customer service and they suggested on searching for the custom rod builders who can replace a handle as Gloomis is not doing this kind of customization. They also confirmed that this will not void the rod warranty, unless I it is problem with handle itself. Is any good custom rod builders in Detroit vicinity?
Thanks for advice.
Alex

GLoomis
I am a rod builder, and I don't suggest you remove the handle.
I would suggest if you don't like that particular rod return/sell
it and get exactly what you need. It is my opinion that Loomis
rod are one of the best things going, but they are expensive.
I have had people give me loomis rods before to rebuild into
a different rod. The first time I said I build it but you (the owner)
haveto tear it down. I didn't want to be responsible for damaging
the blank durring teardown. Well I later felt I should have done
the tear down or at least instructed it. He used a dremel tool,
and carved the blank up pretty bad. You can e-mail me offline if you wish to disscuss more.

Rowboat thanks for your help. Do you think I would feel a difference between 9 and 8.6 foot rod the same power and action?

8' 6' vs 9' ?
Well I can't honestly say I know the difference.
How ever I have 9' 6" rod I use all the time for salmon
and steelhead. The rest of my rods are longer.
I don't pier fish much, but I do fish in habors on occations.
I would be using 9' 6" or longer.
Also I don't use more than 6# line either.
So, Your rod lenth choice has more to do with fishing line
you choose. Heavy lines work well with shorter rods.
Longer rods are for lighter line use> i.e. noodle rods.
Light line cast farther. So you decide what you like to work with.
You can turn some pretty mean fish around with a noodle rod
and 6# line. you can cast a light weight a long way too.
That is the advantage I like, and the chalenge to land
a big fish on light tackle.
Good luck to you.
