WTB Snow plow for '99 Chevy 2500

Looking for a good plow for my truck.

Also, does anyone know if it's economically feasible to buy the "harware" to convert a plow used on a Dodge so it can be used on a Chevy?

What brand/ model plow are you thinking of converting?

There are two used plows I've seen in my area. One is a straight 8' and the other a V-plow. I know the straight plow came off a Ford and the V off a Dodge. I haven't checked on the brands as of yet.

You will need the frame to fit your truck from that manufacturer. They do change the way the plows and frame mount on the truck every few years. For instance I have 3 boss plows 1991, 1997, 2001 all have different mounts.

Mike, on your reccomendation, I put a Boss on my '02 2500 HD. That smarthitch system is awesome, I can mount or dismount that plow in less than 1 minute alone.

Would it be accurate to say that all plows are universal as long as you obtain the proper mounting hardware for your truck?

I priced a new 8' straight blade (Western) at $3500 installed. I'm trying to figure out if I'm better off buying a used plow then ordering the harware to fit my truck.

It all boils down to what does the harware cost?

Plows are universal with the proper mounting kit. You need to find out what model plow you are looking to convert to your truck, then call the appropriate dealer. A lot of older plows have no mount available to fit a newer truck. I went with a 7'6" plow for manuverability, 8' seemed like a beast for my uses, with all the turns and tight spaces I have to keep clear.

Are you going to plow commercial sites with it or driveways? Or just your own driveway? I have 9 pickups 6 with Boss V's and 3 with Boss straights with Pro-wings on them. Our new truck is getting a Fisher V with a trip edge. The problem we've had with the Boss V is that they don't trip well when you hit a manhole cover or something. The wings get tweeked easily. If your just doing a driveway or two check with dealers in your area they may have a bulletin board for items for sale. In the Grand Rapids area B & B truck equipment or Allied truck equip. may have something used. You may want to look at Plowsite.com and see if they have a for sale forum.

i've got 2 boss v plows. if your looking at boss stay away from the the old rapattach 2 system. 1995-? my new plow is smart hitch. this is the only way to go. drive up to it hook the wires and flip the switch. a lot of dealers have used mounts. do search on snowplow parts and a site i think is named midwest plow parts list frames for almost every plow. my new 8'2 boss v blade cost $3700 out the door flap included.

I will be plowing one parking lot approximately 120' x 50' and
between mini-storage buildings. I will also do my own driveway.

The smart-hitch system seems like the way to go. I'm only doing my properties and I'd like to leave the plow off the truck as much as possible.

Seems like an 8' is too large and I'm not sure I need to spend the extra money on a V-plow.

If you are doing between mini-storage builings a V-plow is the ticket. With a straight plow you push to one side or the other. With a V, you can push a ton of snow straight to the end with out losing it all off the sides. Cuts you plowing down by at least half. Well worth the added cost and time saved.

I would go with an 8' blade for sure. We're talking $200.00 Price difference. An 8' V should cost about $4,300.00 new installed. An 8' straight blade about $3,500.00 new installed. If you add Pro-wings to the straight blade (helps hold the snow in front of the blade) you'll save maybe $400.00 over the 8' V. It's up to you. If your only plowing a few hours a night you could get a newer used straight blade and put some pro-wings on it. It all depends on how much you want to spend. I'll be spending $7,500 on a fisher V with a back blade installed.

Just spotted a Curtis 7-1/2' straight blade that looks brand new. Called him and he said the first $1,700 takes it. I'd still have to buy the hardware for it to fit my truck but it's the best deal so far.

Walleye Mike, I hear you on the V-plow for the mini-storage. Unfortunately the money is tight and I need to watch the spending. (also, I PM'd you about your truck)

Freestone, I like the wings idea. Maybe those will help between the buildings.

I'm sure you'll be fine with a Curtis. Put some Pro-wings on it and you'll handle things fine. I have to buy the the best and most durable because some guys just pound on trucks for 10 hrs a night so they can go home and sleep. You can take it easy with your truck and still get things done in plenty of time. Good Luck!
