I heard this AM that we are now posting guards at the border armed with geiger counters because it was discovered that the Canadians were sneaking some radioactive material into their trash they've been sending us. ENOUGH already!!

How it ever got started?
Question: Who were the idiots that ever conceived and OK'd the idea to let these people bring their trash and garbage over here in the first place?
I've asked/sent this question in e-mails to Senator Stabenow, Senator Levin and others and have never got a straight or exceptable answer.
I still can’t believe that people from other countries and states can just show up here and dump their garbage? Seems to me someone from Lansing probably created this nightmare! I'm starting to get the impression that it is the very politicians that are now trying to stop it that originally OK’d it! Can you say "Campaign contributions?"
Anyone here know for sure how this ever got started?

Lets get this crap STOPPED !!!
I signed that petition a while ago. Just the other day I got an "email update" I guess you'd call it. Here it is :
Dear John,
What an incredible summer! I have just returned from a state-wide tour to stop Canadian trash. I'm thrilled by the overwhelming response of concerned Michiganians from all over our state who are joining the fight to stop the flood of Canadian trash and sewage.
As you may know, President Bush has announced the nomination of Governor Mike Leavitt of Utah to be the new Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Under existing law, our best strategy for stopping Canadian trash is to enforce an existing treaty that allows the EPA to stop these shipments at the border. To date, the EPA has never enforced this treaty.
Every day, 180 trucks cross through our borders with Canada -- with trucks crossing at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, at the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie, and returning to Canada via the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit. Last year, Canadian trash trucks dumped 6,607,856 cubic yards of waste on Michigan landfills, and those numbers are expected to be significantly higher for 2003.
I expect to meet with Governor Leavitt during his confirmation hearings in the Senate, and I will present him with the petitions that have been signed by tens of thousands of Michiganians over the summer. But I need your help!
We want to reach 100,000 signatures before I meet with Governor Leavitt. If you would take a moment to send a quick note to five (5) of your friends, urging them to join you in signing the online petition, it will make a HUGE difference! Here's a sample letter to cut and paste:
================================================== ===============
Dear Friend,
I wanted to let you know about an issue that is very important to me. In January of 2003, Toronto closed its last landfill, and now sends all of its trash to landfills around Michigan. Over 6 million cubic yards of trash from Canada ends up in Michigan landfills each year. Recently, the Toronto city council approved a contract to ship thousands of tons of raw sewage to Michigan for disposal.
That's why I've joined U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow's fight to stop Canadian trash now! Under an existing international agreement, the U.S. government has the power to stop these shipments -- but only if the EPA enforces the treaty. I've signed an online petition to urge the new EPA Administrator to begin enforcing the treaty immediately and stop the Canadian trash and sewage sludge at the border.
You can sign the online petition by visiting Senator Stabenow's website at http://stabenow.senate.gov/stoptrash. I hope you'll take a moment and join me in this fight to protect our state from foreign trash and sewage.
================================================== ====
Please encourage your friends and family to visit http://stabenow.senate.gov/stoptrash and sign the online petition today!
Thanks for your help! I'm confident that, working together, we can stop Canadian trash now!
Sincerely,
Debbie Stabenow
United States Senator
I sure hope we can put an end to this. It is absolutely ridiculous !

This is an prime example of how they treat us. Isn't it time it stoped?
We can rally around to get Dove hunting in Michigan.
We can rally around to get a watch for poachers.
Why can't we rally around to stop them from dumping trash in our state?

It's called Free Trade and involves current NAFTA agreements. Companies like Waste Management are taking advantage of the current rules and laws to increase and grow their businesses and that includes importing trash.
It doesn't make much sense to me, actually it does, but it's offensive. However, that's the way it is. Ontario has more open land and space for landfill sites than we do, (MI being a penninsula and large wetlands state). The whole way trash and solid waste is handled in this country is ludicrus. All we can do is make our wishes known and try to minimize what we individually throw away and try to recycle more. As spaces fill up it will become increasingly expensive to dispose of waste. Do you go out of your way to recycle? Does your community have a curbside recyling program? Do you have a compost pile in your yard for lawn waste?
