Slammers?

Does anyone use these for ice fishing? How do they work? Where can you get them? Anywhere online?

If you go back to "Ice Fishing Reports" down at the bottom of the reports on the right side you will see a 1 2 click on the 2 and it will take you to the second page of "ice Fishing" then scroll down to "Slammer Tip-Up"

I exchanged emails with Matt today. It seems you can't buy them assemled. All he sells are the kits to make them. Further, you can't get them in Grand Rapids.

I know they catch steelhead this way in the flooded river motuhs of Lake Michigan.

Dan, I'm not trying to sound lame, but I have no idea what 'ice fishing reports' is in reference to. I went back to the home page and searched any links there under fishing. I searched the forums for keywords 'ice fishing reports' and even 'reports' and didn't come up with anything older than 12/07/00.

I did however go to the link that somebody else provided. Maybe you could cut and paste a link so I could get a clue on what the original post was about.

That thing looks cool! I would try it with a stinger hook attached just to be sure.

I emailed Matt, and he got back to me right away. They do look cool. In college we used fishing rods for big pike, but had to "pack" the butt in the ice and put a bobber on the snow so we new when we had a bite. This takes all the guess work out of it. And Matt is right, a fish on a rod is a lot funner than handlining one anyday. Drill 'em deep.

Last winter there was a segment on Fred Trost's Practical Sportsman television show on PBS that showed a "Just Fishin Slammer". This device is NOT a Slammer Tip-Up™ (now commonly referred to across the country as just a "slammer" ) which Just Fishin' USED to sell. The type of ice-fishing device that was shown is what is known amongst the steelhead ice-fishing fraternity as, a "Tripper", which is a close take-off of the elusive and little known-about "Whip Up" which has been around for over thirty years. Whip-Ups and Trippers are usually custom built to fit a particular rod. Mr. Trost was informed about this trademark infringement by e-mail and Just Fishing was contacted by my attorney and instructed to cease and desist in the use of the "Slammer" name in conjuction with a tip-up like product.

I got one and used it Sunday. Caught one pike on it in Hamlin Lk. Was a riot.

Here are my beefs:
1. The release sucks.
2. The instructions don't tell you how to use it.
3. You can't buy them assembled. I had to get the wood, cut it, drill it, and assemble it.

King Zip, what kind of release does it have? Like a little walleye clamp release?

It's a simple split ring....you know, the kind you use as a key ring. You bend the rod over and put the tip in the ring. The tension of the rod holds the tip in place. Nothing is attached to the line. It's a really convoluted method if you ask me.

King Zip - please reread the instruction set-up sheet. The ORANGE one.

The FIRST instruction and illustration tell you and show you to bend the first GUIDE, not the TIP, back slightly.

1. Bend first guide down from rod tip back towards reel on rod.

You do NOT put the tip of the rod through the ring. The ring slips over the first guide DOWN from the rod tip which must be bent slightly. The ring is pushed off of the bent guide by tension on the line. The first few inches of your rod will hang vertically in front of the Slammer arm. This is all explained in the set-up instruction sheet that comes with Slammer Tip-Up Kits.

Putting the tip of your rod through the ring is a good way to break your rod. There is a difference between the TIP of your rod and the GUIDES on your rod.

The main reason I do not manufacture and sell completed Slammers is this comment: "I can build something like that myself" Many people HAVE built "something like that" and end up breaking rods, spending too much time and money on it, and never get it to work properly to catch fish. Nowadays, I offer the Slammer in a kit form and YES you DO have to do some sawing, drilling and assembling. This saves me time from woodworking and saves you money.

If anyone has problems or can't follow the instructions, blueprints or set-up sheets with Slammer Tip-Ups then PLEASE send me an email.

I will be including another illustration that shows the release mechanism in close-up detail. I thought my instructions and illustrations were pretty clear, but due to a few people having problems setting the release mechanism, I will be revising my set-up instructions included with Slammer Tip-Ups.
