How's the ice on Union Lake? Anyone have any success there before? I am looking for some new fishing water to try and I thought trying to ice fish for trout would be a change from the norm.

Due to its rather deep holes, Union takes a little longer to ice-over. if the weather holds up we should be able o get out there by the first week in January.

Fish

I saw a lone fisherman out on Union Lk Friday afternoon. I hit a few smaller lakes yestersay and noticed him out there on Union by himself. He was fishing over approx 50 feet of water!! I grew up on Union and know the water well. I was a little apprehensive...Union is deep and usually takes awhile to freeze. I imagine there will be a lot of people out this weekend...nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd!!

Stay clear of the green breakwall across form the sandbar...is't about 110' deep and takes longer to freeze than the rest of the lake.

Good luck...It's a great lake to fish.

Can anyone suggest some areas of the lake and techniques to try. I've never fished this lake before, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wink

If you park at the DNR boat launch you can usually see a group of shanties just across the bay. These guys are in anywhere from 10-50' of water. You can stick by them until you get a feel for the lake. I usually fish the opposite shore for walleye (far east end) I suggest you get a lake map due to the large number of fishable holes. Union lake holds a lot of fish (in my opinion) and there is a lot of water to cover so the map will help you a LOT!

Good luck
