heading up to higgins lake saturday and i was wondering were the nearest bait shops are up there and where i should access for some smelt and trout fishing. btw, i do not have a quad or snowmobile and i will not drive on the ice.

There's a bait shop in Lake City (they were out of wax worms last Saturday), a place on Old 27 on your way, and another one just North of the West launch. We caught a lot of smelt last Saturday off of the West launch. You'll see the shanty town. We set up a little ways away from it to avoid the crowd (a little anyway). Might be too busy around there to have much luck for trout.
