Default Google Maps - Green land = public??

Just looking at Google maps in the area I will be hunting up in the UP for the gun season and found a couple small patches of green just down the road. I noticed that most other places, the green areas are public land. Is this the case, and are these open to hunting in the majority of the UP?

thanks.

I wouldn't trust that as being public land...

Stop at the local chamber of commerce and get a current plat book

A lot of times green = woods and white = open fields/swampy areas.

Don't rely on a Google map though. Get a Michigan Gazeteer and a Plat Book.

I think they use green for Nat Forest, public parks, and even golf courses. I wouldn't count on it being open to hunting.

About the most comprehensive FREE hunting maps I know of are right here:

http://mich.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-103...0319--,00.html

Click on the county you want and you'll get a very detailed PDF file. Then in Adobe, you can zoom in on the area you want and click on "print current view" for a paper copy. Works great!

Yes, green represents state land. I hunt in southern Michigan in a lot of game areas and google maps has very rarely been wrong. I use my iphone with GPS tracking and google maps, it's a life saver. There's stuff out there I never knew about.

Many local libraries also have local plat books. This would at least give an idea of how much land is National Forest or owned by the State in a twp.

yeah, the plat book is my next shot. Just noticed that most of the public land down here (detroit area) is always green. So are golf courses though i guess... My bad.

Anyone happen to have one for Chippewa co-stalwart area?

Zoom in on the area you want, then click print and when your printer options come up, select "print current view". Couldn't be simpler

I do...

Just FYI, depending on the map (I should have said this earlier), green is usually timber, but green with a yellow tint is usually public. A lot of the paper land is not seen with a yellow tint though and is open to public hunting. Most is owned by Mead or Plum Creek....this is where a good plat book comes in handy.

Thanks -that map is perfect and answers my question. A little hard to make out the smaller parcels, but this will work.

Google maps shows my property in green. The surrounding farmland is shown in white. Plat books should give you a good idea on what is public and what is private with the exception of CFA land but that is available from the DNR.

With 6 million acres open to public hunting it's not hard to find a spot where you are the only one in a quarter section. Many times you are the only one in the whole section.

Be care full, that's not how it is intended to be used. The only way to be sure is to go to the county courthouse and pull the records with a tax ID, sometimes even plat books are wrong, especially if they are outdated.

This is not 100% accurate either. My copy of the Missaukee County plat book shows an 80 acre parcel of State owned land a mile and a half south of my property. The map in the above link shows that parcel as white.
