Default Ear Tags in Red Oak Unit

My dad has been baiting for me and he's been getting several pictures of bears with different colored ear tags and some of them are also branded. Anybody else getting pictures of tagged bears?

Default don't know about the brands but

for a number of years the DNR was tagging bears for a study they were doing. Call Houghton Lake and ask for Larry, I think he's still there, he's the guy that did the studies. Ask him who is branding bears-I've never heard of that before, and am curious.

There is a study being done in club country, not by the DNR, but by Stephen Austin University. They are examining a huge variety factors, a few of them being the most effective ways for marking bears.

They ear tagged some and freeze branded some.

The ears tags can easily be removed by a taxidermist and the branding mark will grow back with white hair and is easily dyed by a taxidermist as well

Default Numbered Bear

I got #76 on camera a few times in the last week. He came from Turtle Lake Club. He traveled about 2 mi out side SE corner of the fence to get to me. Also some collered bears that are coming from beaver lake club are showing up 1 mi from there home. Sad thing about the numbered bear is you wait 5 yrs to draw a tag and maby get a bear rug with a bald spot and a number.

When you get it mounted, no one will ever know the difference, its not a baldspot, its white hair, easily dyed, and a pair of needle nose pliers will solve your ear tag problem.

Default the bald one

They shave the hind quarter, brand, and tag the bear. You will find the branded bear wearing tags. By the time the hair grows out we will be the white oak bear unit.

Default shaved bear leg

If I took a bear that had an ear tag and a brand, I'd want both left on the hide, because that's something special...

My picture was taken about 7 miles south of Turtle Lake.
