Default DMU clarification??

does anybody have any concrete knowledge of the 486/other dmu quoats?

There are way more than 60,000 permits left for the SLP so what does a person buy or ask for when they go to the license vendor? And, what are their tags good for?

What I have read is that a 486 tag can be purchased that will allow me to hunt on any private land in the SLP with the land owners permission, barring Kent. Also, any private land tag purchased for any DMU within 486 is valid for the same as above. Is this info false?

I hunt in 173, there are 400 LO tags available. Genesse(025) has 8500 tags available. Why wouldn't I buy a Genesse(025) tag for 173?

Dan, your making it more complicated than what it is, just ask for 486

dmu 486 is private land

for public land 173 is still dmu 173

I was also confused till malinse cleared it up for me by a pm

The chart shows 173 in dmu 486

The information you've provided is false!! I am not making it more complicated than it needs to be.

486 has 60,000 available tags, we've got that. 025 has 8500 available tags. The 025 was not on the list you provided but it was on the list provided to the license vendors.

Tommorrow when the mass shows up for their tags 60,000 486 tags will be gone after the 1st 30,000 people buy their 2 tag limit. Then what tags are people going to buy? And, will they be able to hunt in any dmu with in the 486 zone?

Think about the question I am asking before you give a pat wrong answer!!

You need to look at the links I provided you with, for one thing I'm not seeing the 400 left over tags on nether of the two bottom links I provided. Yes I know I did some editing after the first post

If you are trying to get a private land permit for dmu 173 just ask for a private land permit 486 it's that simple

If your trying to get a public land permit for 173 there are non available

The DNR gave the license vendors a bulletin this morning that has a list of what tags are available for specific area/dmu's in the SLP. Specifically 173 has 400 tags, 025 has 8500. Those numbers are above and beyond the 60,000 486 tags. Why would the DNR put out those numbers to us if everyone is to have a 486 anyway?

If everyone buys a 486 tag and not a dmu specific tag they will sell out rather quickly. 20,000 people buy three tags and they are gone. I guess I don't know how you could even argue with that.

My only question is: If I buy a DMU specific tag, can I use it through out the 486 zone like the book tells me I can? I understand the 486 tag I don't need that answer, just answer the question I asked please!!

Dan all of the left over private land tags in area in dmu 486
http://www.michigandnr.com/available...ult.asp?Type=P

are now part of the 60,000

I see what your saying, I don't know if we will have to specify which dmu in 486 or not. If not, the whole system sucks as most deer could just be killed in one area of the state if thats the way the license's were sold. This would make no sense at all from a point of herd management.

So the quota for the SLP went down? What was the purpose for the DMU specific bulletin. I am thinking the later part of your post is the most correct!! Read the last two sentences of the 486 portion of your antlerless guide and see how confused you become.

I agree Dan, And I don't like the new system at all if it's just going to lump all the left over tags in 486. Most of those deer could be killed in 3 or 4 counties if that's the way the licenses were sold. From a management point of view it make no sense at all. Maybe I'll call bare's and ask the girls I know that work in there how it's going to go down. If I find anything more out today I'll post it here later

Dan I just called bares and thats the way it's going down, just ask for your permits for 486

I have lost a little more confidence in our states ability to manage it's deer herd

I hope I was able to help you out a little, I tried

I thought I wouln't have to wait in line because of each DMU's quota and the 60,000 for 486, there would be plenty. Now you guys have me wondering again.
Just like the DNR, nothing can be simple.

Like the lady at Bare's I will be selling the licenses at 10 am tommorrow. I was looking for clarification because the DNR could not provide it. Like everyone else I will be selling the 486 tags, but I garuntee they sell out tommorrow, and then what?

I hunt DMU 059 which is included in the new DMU 486. What advantage is there to purchasing a tag specific to 486? There are 19,000 OTC tags allocated to 059, and if I read the new rules correctly I can use my 059-specific tag in any DMU within 486.

In the SLP the recommendation is for 35,700 public land and 423,000 private land antlerless deer licenses to be available. In 2008, there were 35,900 public land and 406,800 private land antlerless deer licenses available......

Two new multi-county DMUs have been established in the Lower Peninsula. Deer Management. Unit 486, covering all but six DMUs in the SLP, is recommended to have a private land antlerless deer license quota of 60,000. Deer Management Unit 487, covering eight DMUs in the NLP, is recommended
to have a private land antlerless deer license quota of 10,000. No public land antlerless deer licenses will be issued for DMU 486 or DMU 487.

Establishing a quota for private land antlerless deer licenses in these multi-county DMUs provides hunters with an option. Hunters will have the choice of purchasing private land antlerless deer licenses for a specific DMU within one of the multi-county DMUs, which is valid in any DMU within the multi-county
DMU, or purchasing private land antlerless deer licenses for DMU 486 or DMU 487.
