Major rule change for 2009 squirrel season
For Immediate Release :
Pursuant to act:12A, Paragraph:C Section:8
DNR Policy Regarding Summer Drought Conditions Adversly Affecting Michigan Wildlife.
Contact : Ben Hadd, Regional Director NRC.
An emergency meeting of the NRC in Lansing today resulted in the following changes to Michigan's 2009 Squirrel Season.
Effective Immediately:
It has been determined that the conditions of the 2009 Summer Drought Index concerning wildlife survival rates have been met with recent adverse summer weather due to global warming severely affecting Michigans wild squirrel populations in many of Michigans counties resulting in massive squirrel loss.
Due to the recent severe winter weather conditions affecting Michigan, compounded with the recently implemented feeding ban in the lower peninsula, the following changes have been implemented :
THE HARVESTING OF ONLY MALE SQUIRRELS WILL BE ALLOWED FOR THE 2009 SEASON.
HARVESTING OF FEMALE SQUIRRELS HAS BEEN SUSPENDED INDEFINATLY.
Changes in bag limits FOR 2009:
The new bag limits for the 2009 squirrel season are as follows :
2 male squirrels may be harvested per day.
It has been determined that the testicles of 1 1/2 year old male squirrels are plainly visible to the hunter therfore it is advised to harvest only those with larger, plainly visible testicles.
Scopes are highly recommended.
Transporting squirrels :
The testicles should be plainly visible with at least one testicle left on the animal when transporting. Wrap testicle in a cool, wet napkin to contain and avoid contamination of meat.
Upon contact by a uniformed Conservation Officer all squirrels in possession must be immediately surrendered for testicle inspection.
This temporary restriction will ensure healthy squirrel populations for future generations.
The office of the Michigan Dept. Of Natural Resources deeply regrets any inconvience this may cause hunters, but, feels that due to the circumstances and the resulting decimation of Michigan Squirrel populations this action is appropriate and necessary.
Penalties for violating these restrictions will include fines of 1500.00 per violation and revocation of hunting privileges for 3 years.

Intresting..... It seems to me that every squirrel I have ever shot has been a female. Maybe thats because they are easiest to find in the woods when there chatterin away or bitchin all the time, I don't understand squirrel even, I just know that a females mouth never takes a rest lol...
Looks like all my time will go towards hunting and training my beagle...shucks...

"Transporting squirrels :

Is it true one could circumvent this new law by wrapping one's own testicle in a wet paper towel?

In such a case it is recommended that one should wrap both of one's testicles in wet paper towel so as to avoid them being used for their original purpose, ever.

Only if you think your marbles could pass for squirrel nuts - but not something I'd brag about on a public forum.
And to those that think TH made all this up, everything is spelled correctly - even the big words (think about it). Except that Mr Hadd's name should only have one d.

Can someone post a link? I can't find anything about this on the DNR website, and we are leaving for squirrel camp on the 18th.

Once a squirrel is located, simply shake the tree. If you hear nuts rattle you're good to go. No scope needed!

If they're wrapped in a wet paper on a cold day and out in plain sight, shrinkage is unavoidable!

It would be funny to walk into the field office with a limit of squirrels for testicular inspection....

This is ridiculous, I called the DNR and they have no information regarding this. Clearly a case of right hand doesn't know what left hand is doing in our DNR. Looks like our trip is canceled now because my dad and his buddy are in there late sixties and their eyes aren't as good as they used to be. They are afraid they won't be able to see well enough.
That's just great, they are now basically taking squirrel hunting away from the old farts like my dad. This bonehead rule just ruined our 23 year squirrel camp tradition.
At least they can deer hunt in October now with their crossbows.
