Oakland County Lakes

I am moving to the Detroit area in June. I am curious to know how good the fishing is on the Oakland County lakes. I would imagine that they get a lot of pressure being so close to a large city. I am curious to know what is in them. Do any of them hold walleye? I just am not sure what to expect. I am moving to Keego Harbor which is smack in the middle of all that water. Kinda' gets me excited thinking about it! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Most all the lakes in oakland co have Bass, pike, Bluegill and catfish. Many have Walleye and a few even have some trout! Alot are heavily fished, but there are so many you don't have to look hard to find one with less people! You will enjoy it for sure!

Fish them during the week or real early or late in the day. Tons of PWC'S and skiers on the weekends. Some of the better lakes are Union lake, Cass lake, Pontiac lake and Orchard lake. Topo maps are avail. for these lakes. They will help you a lot. They have many dropoffs and deep holes.

concur with Walleye, you're landing smack dab in the middle of fishing heaven(in oakland county, anyway).

you'll be in spittin' distance of my 2 favourites, cass and pontiac lakes. like he said, the water putts can get very annoying.
but there some good lake with restrictions, so just takes a little searching.

Even with all the boaters and PWC's there are many fish to be caught you just have to fish a little deeper.

Last year on Cass Lake I hooked this Smallmouth bass off of my pontoon, after he jumped and dove back down a boat drove between me and where the fish jumped. I did land the fish.

Do not let this scare you as I can go out on cass lake on any weekend and catch fish. Sometimes I leave the sandbar party to go catch someone a fish. It usually takes only 1-5 casts to get a smallmouth..

Lake Orion is a very nice little spot for bass fishing. A local tournement is held every tuesday night, and there is some excellent fishing. Like all the other posts, this lake fills up on the weekend. Best times are early in the morning, and later in the evening. This lake was even said to be stocked with walleye the past few years, but i know of two guys who have caught them. My grandfather....nice 18 incher, and a guy at the bait store.

When and where do they hold those Tuesday Tourney's? I entered it a couple times probably 3 or 4 years back, was fun. It was run from that Party/gas/Bait shop on the east end of the lake. Was out on Orion last year and the store was closed down.
Wouldn't mind a little friendly competition on Tuesday's

Hi, the Tuesday tourneys are held at the local marina. Orion Marina, right on M-24. 20 dollars per person, and 60 per boat. A decent payoff for a small tournement. Ya i don t know what the deal is with that store. They probably dont make enough to be open all the time. It is a hit or miss thing with that store. A great place to get bait is downtown lake orion. Broadway street. Hook Line and Sinker. He's a good guy in there, but his hours are a little weird right now due to an injury.

i grew up and learned to fish on "wolverine" lk. way up headwaters for the huron river. i'm a nite fisherman. don't have to contend with a lotta traffic. i generally target lg. mouth. surface plugs are fine.black jitterbug, black hula popper, rapala floating(early dusk). when all else fails go to the live bait. minnow/nite crawler. the guys have pretty much covered the lakes but there remain alot of small unpressured treasures.oakland co. is better known as the lakes area. b.b.

I just moved into Oakland County last summer, bought my first boat this spring and am having a BLAST fishing so many lakes. Seems I can not decide which are my favorites, as I seem to do well at almost all of them.

Living as I do within about 10 minutes of at leat 4 decent lakes with launches, and less than 20 min from 4-5 others, makes it easy to get out for a few hours or less if I want to.

I can easily recommend Wolverine Lake, Union, Long lake, Pontiac and a little lesser known jewel called Cedar Island lake. This is a Great lake with good drops. But one drawback....launch is cement but parking is for no more than 4 trucks and trailers...but it is a good lake.

I still want to try a few more, so anyone wanting to get out in the next few weeks...let me know...I am off work till Oct. and I plan on some decent fishing
