Pickeral or Walleye?
I once went on a fishing trip to Shoal Lake in Canada, which is north of Minnesota. We asked what the locals were catching and they said that the pickeral were really biting well. So we spent a whole day throwing large spoons and tandem spinners for what we thought were Northerns, only to find out we should have been fishing for Walleyes. Good news is, we actually caught quite a few large Northerns.

Actually in Canada the locals refer to walleye as pickerel. In fact in many US restaurants, if you see pickerel on the menu it is actually walleye. When I'm in Canada fishing and want to find out where the walleye are, I ask them where can I find some pickerel.
Maybe it's code so we can't find the 'eyes.

Here is another web site.

I concluded that my Dad was right. But everything I read gave all these fish a similar name. Thus, who really knows what someone is referring to when they say Pickerel.

Yeah you try living in Windsor fishing for eye's er I mean pickeral, I swear the name changes in the middle of the trenton channel. Then go fish for steelies in the grey bruce peninsula in Ontario where steelie's are called bow's, then head to eireau where bow's are called steelie's. Got you confused yet????

Canadian terminology, rules and regs probably authored by Sir Red Green, Minister of Confusion, eh? Can we swap nephew for Freddy Trost, plus one draft pick?
