My father and I went out wading off Point Lookout yesterday. We fished from about 3:00 until 9:30 throwing thundersticks, rapalas, and spoons. Neither of us even had a strike. The dudes in boats were getting quite a few and boy, were there a lotta boats out! I think the problem was that we, in waders, couldn't get out far enough to where the fish were located. I could cast a 7/8 ounce Pixee spoon that far, but I was still right on the edge of where the boats were fishing.

No smelt either from what we saw. Granted, we left before the run usually starts, but several people I talked to had been out the nights previous and gotten squat. (One guy dipped for 3 hours and ended up with 2 whole smelt.) I think the water's still too cold. We're supposed to get rain this week, while it's still warm. Hopefully, that will get em started.

Hey Jim,
Don't give up yet. I was out there Saturday and the wind had the warm water pushed out. That is why the guys in the boats were doing a little better. The recent winds should have banked that warm water back up along shore.

The next time Point Lookout is slow, head up to Whitestone Point where the water intake is for Bay City, Saginaw and Midland. The warmer water will sometimes concentrate there due to the wind and current path. Cast off the rock point. There is a deep dropoff within casting distance...
