Flourocarbon Leaders for Hand Lining.

Anyone out there trying their own leaders using flourocarbon line?

Some Smallmouth Bass guides in Southern Lake Erie are recommending Flourocarbon leaders for smallmouth.

Hey Goosewa i have been useing florocarbon leaders for handlineing last sat i got six fish and my buddies got 2 they were useing same baits and lenth of leads but not florocarbon i wasd only running one reeel they were useing 2 so does it make a diff i dont know but i have been doing better than them all yr handlineing you tell me.

I know exactly what your talking about. Leader size does make a big difference. I use 15 lb Trilene XT and black swivels for the leaders that I tie. My best buddy and fishing partner uses 20 lb Stren and all but three of the fish we caught Saturday were on my 15 lb setup. He kicked me out of my seat and made me drive (His Boat) after the third fish I caught on my setup.

I am going to buy some florocarbon line and tie a couple of leads this evening. Thanks for the reply. Good luck to you.

Hey guys, my ears are open! Years ago, I thought I would try lighter line for my leaders thinking I would catch more fish. I think I tied up 12 lb. and headed out for a night on the river. By the time the night was over I was so frustrated from tangled leaders in the bottom of the boat that I threw them all out and have been using 30 lb. ever since because of its stiffness. I usually run 3 leads, a 40 ft., 20 ft. and a 4 ft. Don't get tangled with 30 lb. but how do you guys get away with 15 lb. without tanglef##ks? I just tied a bunch of new 30 lb. leads yesterday and wondering if I should start over! By the way I use Seaguars (sp?) florocarbon on my leaders for lake fishing with some pretty good results!

I've been using 20lb Clear Blue Stren for 16 years now and have caught fish consistantly every season. My uncle who taught me swore by 25lb "cheapest he could find" and did well for over 50 years. "Gone Fishing" I have to agree with you and stick with you have been happiest with in the past. Nothing worse than trying to untangle a 40', a 18' and a 5' leader while your partner is flippin' fish in the boat.

By the way I picked up 3 jigging from the trailer park to Garwood on Sun and one on wire by Belle Isle bridge on Sat.

i have tried it as well had 20# vanish and i didnt like it i lost a rap trying to flip in a 2 # could have been the not but when i looked it looked like a clean brake i think it could be effective but will stick to my 20# stren clear blue hey like they say "if it aint broke dont fix it !! lol"

I have been using 15 lb leaders for a while. I have had no problems handling the 15 lb in the boat. However, I did have one tangle this weekend which I did get out quick. I think that was contributed to two things:

1. My Brother-in Law. It was his first time hand lining and did not really know what was going on.

2. The reels on my buddies boat were mounted too far toward the stern of the boat. The reel could not take up the remaining slack on the Shank. I have my reels mounted a little further toward the bow of the boat.

The flocarbon i am using is 20lb p line as far as the tangleing up thing retie my leads every time i go just to make sure there arent any knicks or weak spots and i tear of the lip of a couple rapallas every daamn time i pull wire down there.I think all the line down there is what does it.
