Default Alaskan Cold Water Report

I was lucky enough to go up to Alaska last week. Some of my family lives up there and I had a great time visiting them as well as doing a lot of fishing. Even have some pics to share!

We had some great halibut fishing out of Homer. The two of us hooked about 25 and landed 15 of them. (limit is 2/person) We fished in 100', but the charter boats go way out to 300+. We didn't get into any huge fish, mostly about 20-25 lbs.

My cousin is a guide on the Kenai river and he took me out with some clients one day. We landed two kings. My fish was 'only' about 45 pounds, and the other was about 55... One fish came on a spin-n-glo with cured eggs, and the other on a sardine wrapped quick fish. Everyone uses jet divers, the 30 and 40 foot models..

The timing of my trip was supposed to match up with the red (sockeye) salmon run, but everything was late this year. So the fishing for reds sucked until the very last day of my trip. From Saturday through Friday I only landed a single fish, and on that next Saturday morning two of us landed about 30. The salmon runs usually come in like clockwork so they were worried that there wouldn't be enough fish to spawn. The commercial and personal dip-netting fisheries were closed mid-week and the limit for reds went down to 1 fish per day on Saturday. So I couldn't keep as many as I would have liked to, but it sure was a lot of fun. We even had that stretch of the river to ourselves. What a blast.

Excellent!! Reds, now that's some fine eating fish, I can see why you were dissapointed but the halibut is not too bad either.

Those are both great eating fish!! Glad to hear you had a good time Karl. I'm thinking in another year or two we'll make the tripback up there. That is great that you have relatives that are up that way!

Oh, and as usual .... great pics!

Good for you, Karl. Sounds like you had a great time up there. Bet you wish you could catch a king like that in LM at one of Caznik's tourneys.
